PHILADELPHIA - McGonigle Hall was bustling with fencers from across the nation as the Temple women's fencing team hosted the 31st annual Temple Open on Saturday. The Owls nearly swept all three weapons, as senior Audrey Barroso won the title in sabre and freshman Epiphany Georges took the crown in foil.
Along with Barroso, freshman Tasia Ford placed in the top ten in sabre finishing in sixth place. Senior Sam Pascarelli ended the day in 16th place, followed by freshman Andrea Haley in 18th place.
In foil, Georges won top honors with junior Alyssa Lomuscio wrapping up competition tied for fifth. Sophomore Mikayla Varadi placed seventh in the weapon, with freshmen Liz Van Son and Teagan Kilpatrick placing 10th and 11th, respectively. Junior Danielle Jones also fared well on the day, placing 20th.
Temple nearly had the three-weapon sweep, with two fencers placing in the top three in epee. Freshman Chantal Montrose placed second and junior Jill Bratton tied for third. Seniors Alyssa Lombardi and Grace Wu earned 12th and 13th place finishes, while freshman Kimberly Howell and junior Nicola Horscroft placed 17th and 18th respectively.
Action for the 31st annual Temple Open ends Sunday with the men's epee, foil and sabre. The Temple women's fencing team returns to action at the Penn State Open on November 13.
