Game Notes
PHILADELPHIA - Temple head coach Fran Dunphy will go for his 400th career coaching win when his Owls take the Liacouras Center floor for a nationally-televised game against the #9/10 Georgetown Hoyas Thursday night (9:00 p.m./ESPN). The Owls (5-2), who will be playing their first home game in nearly a month, are riding a 10-game winning streak in their home arena, and are 33-6 (.846) in the building since the start of the 2007-08 season.
Defense has been the key to the Owls success, as Temple has held all but its last opponent, Maryland (64-61 win) under 60 points. The Cherry and White ranks 11th in the nation in scoring defense (55.4 ppg.) and 23rd in field goal percentage defense (.372) in data released Monday by the NCAA. TU also leads the Atlantic 10 in both categories.
Junior guard Ramone Moore (12.3 ppg.) leads a balanced offensive attack. Backcourt and classmate Juan Fernandez (11.4 ppg.) tops the Owls in assists (19) while senior forward Lavoy Allen (11.4 ppg.), a Wooden and Naismith Award candidate, is the team's leading rebounder (6.9 rpg.). Allen shared A-10 co-Player of the Week honors this past week after posting his first two double-doubles of the season in wins over Central Michigan and Maryland.
Four other TU players average above five points per game while five more players are above 3.9 rebounds per game as the 2010-11 Temple squad is truly a sum of its parts.
Georgetown, under the direction of John Thompson III?and off to a perfect 8-0 start, is led by Big East Preseason Player of the Year Austin Freeman. The senior guard is averaging 20.1 points per game while shooting 57 percent from the field and 54.3 percent (25-46) from three-point range. Senior guard Chris Wright (14.8 ppg.) tops the Hoyas in assists (54) and steals (17) while junior guard Jason Clark (14.9 ppg.) is second on the team in three-pointers (19, .442).
Senior forward Julian Vaughn (9.0 ppg.) tops the Hoyas, who shoot 51 percent from the floor as a team and 43.8 percent from three-point range, in rebounds (6.9 rpg.) and blocks (19).
Temple leads the alltime series, 21-14, and has won the only meeting (59-53, 2/14/04) in the Liacouras Center.
