Lomuscio places an impressive second in foil, Thompson 53rd in sabre
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Sophomores Alyssa Lomuscio and Kamali Thompson represented Temple at the US Fencing Junior Olympics, running February 13 to 16 in Memphis, Tenn. The tournament, which features the top under 20 fencers from across the nation, is the largest of its kind featuring over 1,000 total fencers.
Lomuscio took an extraordinary second place finish out of 145 fencers in women's foil, falling to Mona Shaito of Texas in the gold medal bout. The Clinton, N.J. native only lost her first and final bouts of the day, winning all in between.
“Alyssa fenced extremely well and I was pleased with how she adjusted,” said Hall of Fame head coach Nikki Franke. “She had a slow start, but really picked it up as the day went on against some really tough competition.”
Thompson placed 53rd in women's sabre out of 111 competitors. The title was eventually won by Eliza Stone of Princeton.
The Owls will host their final home meet of the season, the Temple Invitational, held February 27 in McGonigle Hall.
