Temple To Collect Old Cell Phones At Dayton Game

2.22.10 | Men's Basketball

Owls partner with Verizon Wireless in support of victims of domestic violence

PHILADELPHIA  – Temple University will be collecting old cell phones at its Wednesday night game against Dayton (6:30 p.m./Comcast SportsNet) in support of Verizon Wireless' HopeLine program. The program collects no-longer used wireless phones, batteries and accessories from any wireless service provider in any condition, and converts them in ways to support victims of domestic violence.

All phones donated to HopeLine that can be refurbished are sold for reuse, and those that are not salvageable are recycled in an environmentally sound way under a zero landfill policy. Proceeds from HopeLine are used to provide wireless phones to survivors of domestic violence who are rebuilding their lives, or cash grants to local shelters and non-profit organizations that focus on domestic violence prevention and awareness.

Since HopeLine's national phone recycling and re-use program was launched in 2001, Verizon Wireless has collected more than 6 million phones and awarded more than $7.9 million in cash grants to domestic violence agencies and organizations throughout the country.
