Owls post five runs in ninth inning rally

Box Score

LAS VEGAS, Nev.
– A five-run top of the ninth gave Temple a 9-7 lead, but three runs in the bottom of the frame from UNLV stole the win, 10-9, Saturday afternoon in Las Vegas. Junior Rafael Cordero fueled the Temple offense, collecting three hits for four RBI.

Junior Ben White was dealing from the start, allowing one earned run over 5.2 innings of work. White fanned five Rebels, only walking two.  Junior Brian Sustersic came on in relief for the next 2.2 innings, striking out four batters and allowing two runs.

A stellar start from White allowed Temple to grow a 4-1 lead. After senior Tony Jusino reached on a hit by pitch and junior Jean Carlos Diaz walked, a single from Cordero in the top of the fourth plated both runners to give the Owls a one-run advantage, 2-1.

Another two-run inning, this time in the sixth, upped the Owls lead. Cordero was again the catalyst, doubling to score junior Ryan Ferguson and crossing home plate himself on a single from sophomore Foster Dunigan.

UNLV would answer in the bottom half of the inning, capitalizing on two extra base hits, including a three-run triple by Cash Thomas, to plate five runners and take a 6-4 advantage.

Another UNLV triple in the bottom of the seventh from Brandon Bayardi added another run to the Temple deficit.

Freshman David Hall began Temple's ninth inning comeback rally, advancing to second on a throwing error. After a free pass to sophomore Jabair Khan, Jusino stepped in with a single up the middle to score Hall.

Back-to-back singles from Cordero and junior Ben Flanary plated Khan and Dragos (pinch ran for Jusino), and set up a two-run single by sophomore Taylor Juran, giving the Owls at 9-7 lead.

The Rebels would not surrender, scoring three runs on three hits and two walks in the bottom half, winning on a walk-off single by Robbie De La Cruz.

UNLV's Matt Hutchison took the win, striking out two in one inning of work. TU Senior Mike Click takes the loss, allowing two runs in his relief effort. The Owls fall to 0-6, while UNLV moves to 5-2.

The series finale in Las Vegas is slated for 1:00 p.m. (PT) on Sunday.
