Temple matches Duke in hits, unable to score
Box Score
DURHAM, N.C. – Redshirt-senior Matt Mongiardini lasted seven innings in the Temple baseball team's series opener at Duke Friday evening, allowing only three runs that would go unmatched by the Owls offense. Duke took game one of a three game set, 3-0, in the confines of Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
It was a tough loss for Mongiardini (0-3), giving the Owls a quality start striking out one batter, only walking two. Senior Matt Blackburn threw one inning in relief, retiring the side in order in the eighth.
Matching his outing was Duke's Mike Ness (1-0), who stymied the Temple bats striking out seven. In relief, Chris Manno earned his first save going three innings with five strikeouts.
Junior Jean Carlos Diaz and classmate Ryan Ferguson led off the top of the second with back-to-back singles, but Ness focused to strike out the next three Owls to halt the momentum.
Duke broke the scoreless tie in the third inning. Dennis O'Grady led off the frame with a double to left, eventually advancing to score after two-straight ground ball outs.
The Owls would put two men on in the fifth, again seeming poised to get on the board. After junior Ben Flanary took one for the team, sophomore Jabair Khan stepped to the plate and singled up the middle. DU's Ness worked out of the jam, forcing two ground outs and fanning one.
Two insurance runs for the Blue Devils off of two doubles and a walk in the sixth moved the eventual final score to 3-0.
Temple's record moves to 0-8, while Duke goes to 5-3. Game two is slated for 3:00 p.m. on Saturday.
NOTES: Jabair Khan led Temple going 2-3 on the evening…Ben Flanary, Jean Carlos Diaz, Ryan Ferguson, and Tony Jusino each had hit…Jusino has hit safely in his last five games, reaching base in six of Temple's first eight...He owns a team-best batting average of .455…Temple and Duke each posted six hits.
