Diamond Owls Swept In Series Opening Doubleheader At UNLV

2.27.10 | Baseball

Owls unable to maintain lead late in game two

Game 1 | Game 2

LAS VEGAS, Nev.
– The Temple baseball team had the lead in both games of Friday's series opening doubleheader at UNLV, but the Rebels managed to come back in both contests, handing the Owls 22-6 and 10-8 losses. Senior Tony Jusino went four-for-five in game two, scoring three times and recording one RBI.

The two teams were originally scheduled to play one game on Friday and then a doubleheader on Saturday, but the schedule was altered due to the threat of rain on Saturday.

A three-run third gave the Temple baseball team their second lead of the contest, but a big inning from UNLV was all too much in game one. The Rebels would post 12 runs in the fifth inning en route to a 22-6 win.

The Owls quickly got on the board in the first, manufacturing one run on a sacrifice fly by junior Adrian Perez (1-3, HR, 4 RBI).

Senior Matt Mongiardini (0-2) forced two quick groundouts from the top of the order, but UNLV's Jarred Frierson tripled to center starting a two-out two-run rally for the Rebels.

After UNLV tacked on another run in the second, the Owls sparked a three-run third to regain the lead. After back-to-back singles from Jusino (2-4, 1 R) and sophomore Foster Dunigan (2-4, 1 R), Perez stepped up and belted a three-run homerun to left, giving the Owls a 4-3 lead.

Unfortunately, the edge would not last for the Owls. Two runs in the fourth gave the advantage back to the home team, but a 12-run UNLV fifth aided by four Temple errors was too much for the Owls to recover.

UNLV's Brady Zuniga took the win, throwing five innings giving up four runs.

In the night cap, Temple again jumped out to an early lead, using a first inning double from junior Ryan Ferguson (2-4, 2 RBI) to score Jusino (4-5, 3 R) and Perez (2-2, 2 R) from second and third.

The Rebels answered with four runs off of starter sophomore Dan Moller (0-1) in the bottom of the inning. The Owls would get it right back however, after Jusino and Perez reached safely it was sophomore Taylor Juran (1-2, 2 RBI) who singled them home.

Each team posting one run in the bottom of the fifth and top half of the sixth, the Owls took advantage of a throwing error and two walks to score two in the seventh, padding their lead to 8-6.

Temple saw the game slip away in the eighth, as costly walks and a fielding error allowed UNLV to plate four runners in the inning.  Seniors Mike Click and Ryan Thomas both gave up two runs in the inning, crediting the loss to Thomas. A scoreless ninth from TU led the final score to 10-8.

UNLV's Thomas Whitsett earned the win in game two, throwing two innings allowing one run.  Starter Tanner Peters was chased in the sixth, after allowing five runs on four walks and 9 hits.

The Owls (0-5) continue their series with UNLV (4-2) on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. (PT).

NOTES:  Jusino is batting a team leading .421 through the Owls first five games (8-19)...Perez owns a team-high 6 RBI.
