LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Junior Byron McKoy and senior Tony Jusino combined for eight hits and four RBI in the series finale Sunday afternoon in the desert, as the Temple baseball team was edged by UNLV 12-10.
Sophomore Tyler Horst made starting debut for the Cherry and White, lasting 3.2 innings with two strikeouts. Senior Matt Blackburn (0-1) took the loss, giving up four runs over 1.1 innings. UNLV's Jared Lee came on in relief to get the win, going five innings allowing two earned runs.
The Rebels jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first, but the Owls were quick to respond.
Four runs on four hits in second inning gave Temple a 4-3 advantage. Freshman David Hall led off the inning with a single, scoring on a wild pitch. RBI-singles from Jusino (5-6, RBI) and junior Jean Carlos Diaz (2-4, 3 RBI) would plate two runners, while McKoy (3-4, 3 RBI) worked his way around the bases to score on a throwing error.
Horst (3.2 IP, 2 K, 2 BB) managed to work his way out of a bases loaded-jam in the second, only allowing one run.
Temple put up a three-spot on two outs in the third, using an RBI-triple from sophomore Jabair Khan and a three-run homerun off the bat of McKoy to pad their lead to 7-4.
UNLV took the lead four straight scoring innings, posting three in the fourth, four in the fifth, and one in each the sixth and seventh.
The Owls showed resiliency, attempting to spark another heroic ninth inning rally. Back-to-back walks to Hall and freshman Henry Knabe put runners on first and second, but UNLV's Lee compounded the mistakes when he hit Khan to load the bases. McKoy and Diaz scored two runners on sacrifice flies, but another clutch hit was not in the works.
Temple falls to 0-7 on the season, while UNLV moves to 6-2.
The Owls are in action next weekend, traveling south on March 5 to compete with Duke.
