Temple hosts George Washington in first home event of 2010
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Temple men's tennis team will be kicking off the home portion of its schedule with two matches against Atlantic 10 foes this weekend. The Owls face George Washington on Friday, February 5 at 4:00 p.m., before hosting Xavier at 8:00 a.m. on Sunday, February 7. Both matches will be held at Arthur Ashe Tennis Center.
Temple carries a 0-2 record into Friday's match after dropping two-straight at Dartmouth in January to open the 2010 season.
The Cherry and White are led in doubles by the play of sophomore Filip Rams and his brother, freshman Kacper Rams. The duo posted a fall doubles mark of 7-2, with one of those losses coming in a tiebreaker to the fourth-ranked doubles team in the country, and are 8-3 on the season.
In singles action, Kacper Rams has also been impressive in his rookie campaign, earning an 8-5 mark. He is 1-1 at the fourth singles spot in 2010, and earned Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week honors for the week ending 1/25.
George Washington comes to Philadelphia with a record of 0-1 after dropping its season opener to Old Dominion on January 16. The Colonials boast a nationally ranked doubles team in #29 Ugur Atalay and Erik Hannah, but the pair did not play against ODU after going 4-4 in the fall.
Xavier enters Sunday's match against Temple with the most experience in the 2010 season. The Musketeers will have played six matches already this spring when they face the Owls. With a 3-2 record as of February 3, Xavier has earned wins against Toledo, Cleveland State and Youngstown State. XU faces another A-10 opponent on Friday, February 5, at Saint Joseph's before heading to Temple for Sunday's match.
Leading the way for Xavier is the doubles pair of Patrick Bandy and Chris Herrlinger. The pair have teamed up at number one in every match this spring, going 4-1 with four-straight wins, while carrying an overall record of 10-3 including the fall season. Bandy is also 13-8 on the year in singles play, with a 2-3 record in 2010.
