Box Score
PHILADELPHIA – Senior Tony Jusino led with three hits, driving four runs as the Temple baseball team (1-10) topped Delaware State (3-7), 14-6, Wednesday afternoon at La Salle's DeVincent Field. Sophomore Tyler Horst started for the Owls, striking out five en route to his and the teams first win of the season.
The victory was especially significant for Owls' head coach Rob Valli, who collected his 300th career win on the day.
Horst (0-1) only allowed four hits to the 21 batters he faced, being charged just three runs. DSU's Shane Foreman took the loss, only lasting 2.1 innings giving up eight earned runs.
The Owls struck early and often, putting up a big four run first for a lead they would not relinquish. After walks to junior Byron McKoy (2-4, HR, 2 RBI) and redshirt-sophomore Steve Nikorak (2-3, RBI), junior Rafael Cordero (1-4, 2 RBI) stepped up and doubled to plate both. Two more runs in the frame would move the early TU lead to 4-0.
McKoy jacked a solo homerun to left in the second to extend the Owls' lead to 5-0.
The Hornets got on the board in the top of the third, scoring two runs off of a double by Abe Eubanks.
Temple answered in the bottom with four runs, capitalizing on a two-run single from sophomore Jabair Khan (2-4, 2 RBI) and a two-run double by senior Tony Jusino (3-5, 4 RBI).
The two teams trading runs in the fifth and sixth, the Owls padded their lead with three runs in the eighth. Khan and sophomore Taylor Juran – both reaching base on singles – scored on a single from Jusino, who reached third on a fielding error in right field.
Four Owls had two or more hits and two or more RBI in the contest, in which TU posted a season high 14 runs. Jusino extended his hit streak to eight games, hitting safely in nine of TU's first 11.
Next for the Owls is a meeting with Hofstra at Skip Wilson Field, slated for March 12 at 2:00 p.m.
