PHILADELPHIA – The Temple baseball team came out with a two-run first inning, but three runs in the bottom of the frame gave crosstown-rival Penn the advantage for good, eventually winning 12-6. Senior Tony Jusino led Temple going three-for-five with a double and two RBI, extending his hit streak to nine games.
Junior Ben White took the hill to start, lasting one inning giving up three runs but earning no decision. Sophomore Dan Moller came on in relief to take the loss, throwing 1.1 innings giving up four earned runs.
Penn starter Vince Voiro also only carded one inning of work, giving up two runs in the first. Taking the win for the Quakers was Reid Terry, one of nine Penn pitchers to take the hill on the day.
Back-to-back doubles from Jusino and junior Byron McKoy got things started for the Owls in the first. McKoy would score on Jusino's extra-base knock, but three straight outs by Voiro ended the inning.
Penn answered in with three in the third, as Dan Williams hit one of his two homeruns on the day to plate two runners. Two straight walks by White set up an RBI single to put the Quakers up 3-2.
After allowing one in the second, the Owls responded to tie the game in the third. McKoy and Jusino were again the spark TU needed, reaching base on singles and eventually scoring on a hit up the middle from junior Ryan Ferguson.
Four runs from Penn in the fourth put TU down for good, capitalizing on a two-run homer from Williams and a two-run double.
The Owls showed life posting one run in the fifth and sixth, but could not surmount the defecit.
Temple is now 1-11 on the season, while Penn moves to 3-5.
Up next, Temple plays at home for the first time this season. The Owls host Marist on March 19, Niagara on March 20, and Pittsburgh on March 21 at Skip Wilson Field.
