#17/17 Men’s Basketball Cruises to 69-51 A-10 Quarterfinal Victory Over St. Bonaventure

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. – Holding a comfortable lead most of the way, the #17/17 Temple men's basketball team cruised its way into the Atlantic 10 Tournament semifinals with a 69-51 quarterfinal win over eighth-seeded St. Bonaventure (15-16). The Owls (27-5) will face #5 seed Rhode Island, a 63-47 winner over #4-seed Saint Louis, in their semifinal at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 13.
Temple is looking to become the first A-10 team to win three straight titles since Massachusetts won five in a row from 1992-96. The Owls have now won eight straight which ranks as their longest streak since a run of 10 wins in 2000-01.
CBS College Sports is televising all the semifinals from Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.
Juan Fernandez hit four-of-five from behind the arc en route to a game-high 17 points, also dishing out a game and career-high-tying seven assists. Lavoy Allen notched his 13th double-double of the season with 14 points and a game-high 15 rebounds, and Micheal Eric went six-of-eight from the field and finished with 13 points for Temple.
Allen's 15 rebounds were the most in a quarterfinal game since 1995, and tied for the 10th most in A-10 Tournament history.
Temple scored first and never trailed. After leading 5-4, the Owls began to dominate and used a 19-4 run, highlighted by Fernandez going 3-for-3 from long range, to take a 24-8 lead before the midway point.
Jonathan Hall made back-to-back layups for St. Bonaventure to pull his team within 12, starting what would become a 9-4 run by the Bonnies that pulled them to within seven, 28-21 with five minutes remaining in the half.
Three-pointers for both teams down the stretch led to a high-scoring end to the half, and a 10-foot buzzer-beater by Allen gave Temple a 39-27 lead at the break.
The Owls shot 50 percent in the first half compared to 43 percent by St. Bonaventure, and had a 24-16 advantage in points in the paint.
Fernandez began the second half with his fourth trey of the game, and Ryan Brooks hit one of his own a few minutes later that gave Temple a 19-point lead with 16:20 remaining.
Temple outshot St. Bonaventure 56.5 percent to 28 percent in the second half, and took its largest lead of 23 with three and a half minutes remaining before the Bonnies closed the game on an 8-3 run.
Ramone Moore came up big for the Owls off the bench, scoring all eight of his points in the second half.
