AMBLER, Pa. – Redshirt-senior Matt Mongiardini gave the Temple baseball team a solid start in their first Atlantic 10 matchup of the season against Rhode Island, lasting 7.2 innings only allowing three earned runs Friday afternoon at Skip Wilson Field. Unable to match the Rams offensively, the Owls dropped the contest 4-1.
Mongiardini (0-5) struck out five on the afternoon, taking the loss. Sophomore Steve Visnic struck out four in 1.1 innings of relief work.
Rhode Island's Tim Boyce went the distance, striking out eight and allowing one run.
The Rams broke the scoreless tie in the third, when Mike LeBel tripled and scored on a groundout by Oliver Palmer. Rhode Island put up another run in the fourth, when Adam Derner scored from second on a single by Rob DeVeney.
Temple cut the lead in half in the fifth, with junior Jean Carlos Diaz setting the table with a leadoff double. Freshman David Hall entered to pinch run for Diaz, and would score on the following play.
Two more runs in the eighth for URI padded their lead and chased Mongiardini.
The Owls appeared poised for a rally in the bottom of the frame, as sophomore Taylor Juran (2-3) led off with a single and junior Ben Flanary followed with a double. With runners on second and third, Boyce recorded three straight outs to get out of the jam.
Temple falls to 2-15, 0-1 in A-10 play while the Rams move to 8-11, 1-0.
The two teams will be back at it tomorrow, with game time slated for 1:00 p.m. at Skip Wilson Field.
