White throws 6.2, strikes out six
Box Score
AMBLER, Pa. – Five runs in the third inning gave the Temple baseball team the lead in Saturday's Atlantic 10 matchup at Skip Wilson Field with Rhode Island, but the Rams posted six unanswered to take the contest 7-5.
Junior Ben White (1-3) lasted 6.2 innings in his sixth start of the season, striking out six batters and walking one in the loss. Senior Matt Blackburn took the final 2.1 innings, giving up one run and striking out one.
Rhode Island's Ken Graveline (2-2) earned the win, going six innings with two strikeouts.
The Rams got on the board in the first, setting the table with back-to-back singles from leadoff man Mike LeBel and Oliver Palmer. White would force the next hitter Kyle Borden into a six-four-three double play, allowing LeBel to plate.
Temple posted a five-run two-out rally in the bottom of the third. After freshman David Hall and sophomore Jabair Khan reached base safely, URI's Graveline recorded two pop-outs. With redshirt-sophomore Steve Nikorak walking to load the bases, junior Adrian Perez stepped up with a two-run single.
A misplay on a fly ball to centerfield by junior Ryan Ferguson kept the inning rolling and plated Nikorak and Perez. Sophomore Taylor Juran singled to plate Ferguson, pushing the lead to 5-1.
Two runs in the fourth and another in the fifth for URI cut the Owls lead to one, but a two run seventh would give the Rams a lead they would not relinquish. Rhode Island would tack on another insurance run in the top ninth to move the final score to 7-5.
With one out and bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth, the Owls were prime for a comeback but could not plate the runners.
The Owls fall to 2-16, 0-2 in A-10 play while Rhode Island moves to 9-11, 2-0.
The series wraps up Sunday, with game time slated for 1:00 p.m.
