PHILADELPHIA - The beginning of the postseason has arrived, and Temple women's basketball heads to the Atlantic 10 Tournament with a first-round bye and looking to win its first title since 2006. Live video and live stats will be available for TU's quarterfinal game, set for 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 6 at the Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro, Md.
TU enters the tournament as the third seed after tying with Dayton at 11-3 but losing the tiebreaker by virtue of a loss to the Flyers. The Owls will face sixth-seeded Duquesne, who defeated 11th-seeded George Washington 61-58 in overtime in the first round on Friday. TU's most likely semifinal opponent, should it advance, would be #2 Dayton.
The A-10 semifinals will be broadcast on CBS College Sports, and Temple's game would be at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 7, if the Owls advance. Should they make it to the final, that game will be played at 5:00 p.m. on Monday, March 8, and will be live on ESPN2.
The Owls have won two straight, and won seven of their last eight regular season games. TU relies heavily on strong defense and impressive rebounding. The Owls' season rebounding margin of +7.6 ranks 12th in NCAA Division I, and their scoring defense of 54.6 ppg ranks 14th nationally.
Sophomore Kristen McCarthy was named to the A-10 First Team, while senior LaKeisha Eaddy earned A-10 Third Team honors. For the third year in a row, Eaddy was also named to the A-10 Defensive Team.
In Temple's win vs. Charlotte on Feb. 13, McCarthy broke the program's all-time single-game scoring record with 42 points. She is averaging a team-best 14.9 ppg (fourth in the A-10) and has led the Owls in scoring in five straight games.
The Owls earned their 20th win of the season vs. Duquesne on Feb. 17, hitting the 20-win mark for the seventh straight year. Second-year head coach Tonya Cardoza recently hit the 40-win plateau with TU's win vs. Charlotte. With 22 wins currently, TU has the most since getting to 25 wins in 2006-07.
Jasmine Stone leads the team in rebounds at 8.6 per game, good enough for fifth place in the A-10. LaKeisha Eaddy (8.3 ppg, 3.6 apg) recently became the 17th player in the history of the program to score 1,000 career points, and now ranks 14th all-time with 1,073 points. Eaddy also has 237 career steals to tie for first all-time in that category.
Junior Marli Bennett (6.2 ppg, 5.0 rpg) has started every game this season, and has scored in double figures in four of the last eight games. She notched her first career double-double in the loss at Dayton with a career-high 15 points and career-high 11 rebounds.
Temple entered the 2009 A-10 Tournament as the #2 seed, but was upset in the semifinals by #3 Charlotte. In 2007-08, #1 Temple was upset in the title game by #3 Xavier. It was the second year in a row the Musketeers earned the upset, as #3 Xavier also upset #2 Temple in the 2006-07 semifinals. For three straight years from 2003-04 to 2005-06, the Owls were A-10 champs.
