Junior forward picks up first career A-10 POW honor
PHILADELPHIA – Temple junior forward Lavoy Allen has been named the Atlantic 10 Conference Co-Player of the Week for the week ending March 6. Allen, who led the #16/20 Owls to a 3-0 week, earns his first career A-10 Player of the Week. He shares the award with senior guard Ricky Harris of the University of Massachusetts
Allen averaged 15.7 points, 12.3 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and made 65.6 percent from the field (21-32) in helping the #16/20 Owls extend its win streak to seven games. In a 65-53 win at La Salle (2/28), he scored 17 points and became the first TU player since Ollie Johnson (24, 2/5/73) to pull down 20 or more rebounds with 21 boards. He followed that with game highs of 18 points and 14 rebounds in a 57-51 win at Saint Louis (3/3). Allen ended the week with 12 points, including the 1000th of his career, in a 70-57 home win over George Washington (3/6) to help the Cherry and White clinch a share of the A-10 regular season title.
The Morrisville, Pa. native (Pennsbury High) is on pace to become the first Temple player to average a double-double since Johnson accomplished the feat in 1970-71. He currently leads the team with a 10.8 rebound average while scoring at an 11.7 clip.
The Owls, 26-5, 14-2, are the #1-seed in the A-10 Tournament and open play against the winner of Tuesday's First Round game featuring #9-seed Duquesne at #8-seed St. Bonaventure on Friday at Atlantic City's Boardwalk Hall. Tip time is noon with the game being televised live by Comcast SportsNet and broadcast on 1210 AM WPHT.
