Perez hits walk off single in 10th

AMBLER, Pa. – With the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th, junior Adrian Perez stepped up and delivered a walk off single to left field to push the Temple men's baseball team past rival Saint Joseph's, 3-2, Tuesday afternoon at Skip Wilson Field.
Sophomore Tyler Horst took the hill to start for Temple, lasting seven innings and striking out five. Senior Matt Blackburn relieved Horst in the eighth, powering through two scoreless innings. Classmate Ryan Thomas blew the Hawks down in the 10th, fanning one and getting the win.
Saint Joseph's used six pitchers on the day, with Chad Simendinger taking the first three. Adam Rivera took the loss, loading the bases in the 10th.
The Hawks got on the board first, scoring two on a fielding error in the fifth inning.
Temple summoned up a two out rally in the bottom of the sixth. Senior Tony Jusino started things off with a one out single to left, advancing to second when redshirt-sophomore Steve Nikorak walked. The next batter junior Ryan Ferguson earned a free pass, loading the bases for junior Jean Carlos Diaz, who fisted a pitch into right to score Jusino. Nikorak plated on a passed ball, evening the game at 2-2.
Both teams' pitchers continued to deal, putting down one-two-three frames in the eighth and ninth.
Junior Ben Flanary led off the Temple 10th with a walk, but was forced out at second on a grounder from sophomore Jabair Khan. With Khan on first, junior Byron McKoy roped a line drive at SJU's second baseman, who was unable to contain the rip. Jusino drew a walk to load the bases, bringing up Perez for a walk off single to left.
Temple is now 4-24 on the season, while Saint Joseph's falls to 11-15.
The Owls stay in town for action this weekend, traveling to compete at La Salle on April 16-18.
