Ferguson jacks two-run homer in ninth to tie

– Junior Ryan Ferguson hit a two-run home run in the top of the ninth to extend Friday's series opener with La Salle into extras, but the Explorers managed a rally in the 12th to walk off with a 11-10 win at DeVincient Field. The Owls combined for 20 hits on the day, including three home runs and eight doubles.

Junior Ben White started and struck out seven over 6.2 innings of work, leaving with a 7-6 lead. Senior Matt Blackburn took over, lasting one inning and giving up three. Classmate Ryan Thomas took the loss, giving up two crucial runs over four innings of work but impressively striking out six of the 19 batters he faced.

La Salle gave the ball to Eric Van Wyk to start, fanning nine over six inngs and giving up seven runs. Pat Christensen earned the win, throwing the final 3.2 innings and striking out five.

Temple came out firing on all cylinders, with sophomore Jabair Khan (4-6, HR, RBI) leading off the game with a solo homer to left. Back-to-back doubles from junior Byron McKoy (2-6, 2B) and senior Tony Jusino (2-6, 2B, RBI) plated another run, while a single from redshirt-sophomore Steve Nikorak (4-6, HR, 2 RBI) tacked on one more. Junior Rafael Cordero doubled to score Nikorak, giving the Owls an early 4-0 lead.

Freshman David Hall (2-6, 2B, RBI) sparked a one run second for TU, leading off with a double and scoring on a throwing error.

The Explorers got on the board in the bottom frame, utilizing long balls from Jon Gyles and Chris Umstead to cut the Owls' lead to 5-2.

Cordero (3-4, 3 2B, RBI) led off the third with his second double of the day, scoring on a single up the middle from Hall to move the score to 6-2.

La Salle chipped away at their deficit with two more in the bottom of the third and another in the fourth to pull within one at 6-5.

Nikorak jacked a solo shot to lead off the Temple fifth, but La Salle matched his effort with one run in the bottom of the frame.

The Owls added one to their tally in the seventh, as junior Adrian Perez led off with a double, eventually scoring on a double play.

La Salle took the lead in the eight, scoring four runs with a three RBI-triple from Gyles, who scored on single by Jeff Flax.

Down to their final three outs, Temple summoned up some more heroics. Nikorak led off with a single to short, setting up a two-run jack by Ferguson to tie the game at 10-10.

Both pitchers were dealing in the 10th and 11th, only allowing one runner combined. The Explorers managed to load the bases with the help of to strategic intentional walks by Temple, but Gyles again came through with a single up the middle to take the win.

Temple falls to 4-25, 1-9 in Atlantic 10 play while La Salle moves to 12-19, 7-3.

Game two at DeVincent Field is slated for Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
