Baseball Takes Game Two At La Salle, 6-5

Owls overcome early deficit for win

PHILADELPHIA
– A three-run seventh inning sparked by a leadoff double from junior Byron McKoy lifted the Temple baseball team past La Salle, 6-5, in game two of the three game series at DeVincent Field. Junior Rafael Cordero posted his second straight three-hit performance, going three-for-five with one RBI.

Redshirt-senior Matt Mongiardini threw the first 5.2 innings for the Owls, striking out five batters and giving up four earned runs. Redshirt-freshman Steve Visnic earned the win (1-0), facing eight batters over 2.1 innings allowing no hits or walks.

La Salle starter Kevin Christy took the loss, going 6.1 innings allowing five earned runs.

The Explorers went up early on a big second inning, scoring four runs on four hits including a solo home run by Chris Umstead.

The Owls would respond in the top of the fourth, posting three runs to cut the lead to 4-3. Junior Ryan Ferguson led off with a double, followed by an infield single from Cordero. A walk to sophomore Taylor Juran loaded the bases, setting up freshman David Hall for a single up the middle to plate two runs. Juran advance to third on a wild pitch, plating on a groundout by sophomore Jabair Khan.

One more from La Salle in the fourth would be their last, moving the tally to 5-3.

McKoy led off the TU seventh with a double, charging some much needed momentum in the Owls favor. Senior Tony Jusino drew a walk, and both runners moved over on a passed ball. A single up the middle from junior Adrian Perez plated McKoy, with Jusino stopping at third.

Redshirt-sophomore Steve Nikorak put down a sacrifice bunt to move Perez to second, and a walk to Ferguson loaded the bases with one out. A fielding error at short on a grounder by Cordero plated two runs, giving Temple the final advantage at 6-5.

The Owls are now 5-25, 2-9 in Atlantic 10 play while La Salle falls to 12-20, 7-4.

The series wraps up Sunday with first pitch slated for 12:00 p.m.
