McKoy rips two-run homer in first for early lead

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA
– The Temple baseball team went up early on a two-run home run in the first inning from junior Byron McKoy, but eight runs in the first two frames by La Salle was too much as the Owls fell 12-5, Sunday afternoon at DeVincent Field.

It was a rough outing for Owls' starter redshirt-sophomore Steve Nikorak, who gave up six earned runs in just 1.2 innings. The Temple defense struggled as well, compiling six errors on the day. Redshirt-freshman Steve Visnic tossed the final 3.2 innings for Temple, allowing no earned runs and only two hits and a walk to the 14 batters he faced.

La Salle's Cody Weiss earned the win, allowing two earned runs and fanning four over the minimum.

Sophomore Jabair Khan (2-5, 2 runs) led off the game with a single through the right side, setting up the next batter McKoy for a two-run shot to right field.

The Explorers answered with three in the first and five in the second, capitalizing on three Temple errors to keep the momentum. Another fielding error in the fourth allowed the home team to extend their lead to 9-2.

The Owls climbed back into it with three runs on three hits in the fifth. Sophomore Taylor Juran started the rally reaching base on a fielding error at short, and moving to second on a single from freshman Dan Dragos. Another single by Khan loaded the bases, and a walk to the next batter Perez moved everyone over scoring Juran. Nikorak singled home Dragos, and another walk to Ferguson tallied the Owls's third run, moving the score to 9-5.

La Salle was not to be outdone, matching Temple's tally in the bottom of the inning to move the final score to 12-5.

The Owls are now 5-26, 2-10 in Atlantic 10 play while the Explorers move to 13-20, 8-4.

Up next for Temple is a midweek matchup at Delaware on Wednesday, April 21. The Owls return to Skip Wilson Field on April 23-25 to host Richmond.
