Men's Crew Earns Three Medals at SIRA Regatta

JV8, V4 win gold; Varsity 8 settles for silver
OAK RIDGE, TN - The Temple men's crew team took home two golds and a silver at the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association Regatta (SIRA), but the Owls 19th-ranked Varsity 8 fell to Florida Tech in a close race.
The Owls Varsity 8, comprised of Pat Curran (stroke), Nenad Ninkovic (7-seat), Jeff Wunderlich (6-seat), Brendan Cunningham (5-seat), Jason Cartwright (4-seat), Aaron Heyde (3-seat), Tom Masterson (2-seat), John Masterson (bow) and Don Norris (cox), was 3/4 of a length behind Florida Tech. The Panthers, who also won the event in 2009, avenged an earlier defeat to the Owls at the Keuper Cup.
Virginia placed third while Jacksonville, who won the Murphy Cup earlier this season, finished fourth. Grand Valley State and Marietta rounded out the strong field.
Temple's Junior Varsity 8, comprised of James Barr (stroke), Scott Waters (7-seat), Brian Rehill (6-seat), Joe Bellesheim (5-seat), Djordje Vilmanovic (4-seat), Peter Ivacic (3-seat), Steve Brady (2-seat), Chris McCann (bow) and Sam Scimeca (cox), posted an open water win with Georgia Tech, Purdue, and Grand Valley State placing second through fourth.
The Owls' other gold medal boat was their Varsity 4, comprised of Scott Herring (stroke), Mike VanAssche (3-seat), Ryan Martin (2-seat), Chris McCann (bow) and Nick Palestro (cox).
Temple's Freshman/Novice 4, comprised of Kevin Nally, Maciej Grudzian, Mike Mirabella and Richard Ehmer, placed fourth in its final.
The Owls next compete on Saturday on the Schuylkill River at the Bergen Cup.
