PHILADELPHIA – Senior Tony Jusino went two-for-five with two homeruns and three RBI and junior Ryan Ferguson went a perfect five-for-five with three RBI in the Temple baseball team's series opening 25-11 loss to Dayton, Friday afternoon at Skip Wilson Field.
The two teams combined for a Skip Wilson Field record 48 hits, tying the record for combined runs with 36. The previous record for hits stood at 41 and runs at 36, being set against Monmouth on March 26, 2006.
Redshirt-senior Matt Mongiardini (0-6) struggled in the start, lasting 3.0 innings and allowing 10 runs to card the loss.
UD's Burny Mitchem started but did not earn the win, lasting 4.1 innings giving up 10 runs. Matt Speckman got the victory (2-0), going 4.2 innings while giving up no earned runs.
Dayton posted back-to-back three run innings to start the game, adding on another in the third to pad their early lead to 7-0.
The Owls, picking up two runs in the first, came up with four more in the sixth to bring the game within one. Freshman David Hall highlighted the inning with a three-run homer to right field, his second in as many games.
Nine runs in the top of the fourth, and three more in the next inning pushed the Flyers lead to 19-6. Dayton scored in each of the first five innings, but would be held scoreless for the remainder.
Jusino's second two-run homer of the game and a two-run double from Ferguson in the fifth helped Temple chip away at the deficit. Junior Byron McKoy would plate in the sixth, moving the score to 19-11.
Dayton scored one in the eighth and five more in the top of the ninth to move the final score to 25-11.
The two teams meet again tomorrow, with action starting at 1:00 p.m. at Skip Wilson Field.
