Head Coach Tonya Cardoza takes Coach of the Year honors; Kristen McCarthy Named Player of the Year
PHILADELPHIA – The Temple women's basketball team earned the two highest honors given at the annual Philadelphia Big 5 Awards Banquet. Second-year head coach Tonya Cardoza earned her second-straight Big 5 Coach of the Year Award, while sophomore Kristen McCarthy was named the Big 5 Player of the Year. The banquet was held April 21 at Drexelbrook in Drexel Hill, Pa.
The Owls earned both those honors despite a second-place finish in the Big 5 this season. Temple finished 3-1, while Villanova was a perfect 4-0 to take the title.
Temple did finish with the best overall record in the Big 5 at 25-9, and earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament for the seventh-straight year. The Owls were the only Big 5 team represented in the postseason, and made the most of it by advancing to the NCAA Second Round after a 65-53 win vs. James Madison. The eighth-seeded Owls then lost to eventual national champ and top-seeded Connecticut in the NCAA Second Round.
McCarthy and senior LaKeisha Eaddy were both named to the Big 5 First Team, along with Maria Getty of Villanova, Brittany Ford of Saint Joseph's and Morgan Robertson of La Salle. For the second straight year, Eaddy was also named to the Big 5 All-Academic Team.
Leading Temple with 14.8 points per game this season, McCarthy was named to the Atlantic 10 First Team and the A-10 All-Tournament Team. She scored 18.1 points per game in conference games to lead the league, and scored a program-record 42 points in a win against Charlotte on Feb. 13.
Eaddy was named to the A-10 Third Team, as well as to the A-10 Defensive Team for the third straight year. She was third on the team in scoring with 8.6 points per game, and led the team in assists (114) and steals (71). Eaddy recorded 252 steals in her career to rank first all-time at Temple, along with 1,124 points to rank 14th all-time.
Temple senior Jasmine Stone and junior Qwedia Wallace both earned Big 5 Second Team honors. Stone led the Owls and ranked fourth in the A-10 with 8.9 rebounds per game, while Wallace was the team's second-leading scorer with 10.6 points per game.
