Owls Rally For Lead, Fall In Opener To Saint Louis, 5-4

SAINT LOUIS – Junior Ben White gave the Owls eight solid innings of work, striking out 10 batters in a series opening 5-4 loss to Saint Louis Saturday night. The Temple baseball team scored two in the fourth to take their only lead of the game, capitalizing on the work of juniors Adrian Perez and Ryan Ferguson.
White gave the Owls a second consecutive eight inning outing, fanning 10 batters and allowing five earned runs. Also for the second straight game, White struck out 10 or more opposing hitters.
SLU's Bryant Cotton took the win, striking out six batters and allowing no earned runs.
Both pitchers held the game scoreless to the third, when Saint Louis got on the board. After Zach Miller led off with a single, Mike Levine doubled to advance him to third. Miller would plate on a sacrifice fly from Cody Cotter.
Perez led of the top of the fourth with a double, followed by a walk from Ferguson. Redshirt-sophomore Steve Nikorak bunted to move the runners over, but a fielding error scored Perez and advanced Ferguson and Nikorak to second and third. Ferguson plated on a sacrifice fly, giving the Owls a 2-1 lead.
The Billikens scored one in the bottom, tying the game at 2-2.
Freshman David Hall reached on an error to lead off the fifth, stealing second to put himself in scoring position. Senior Tony Jusino stepped in with an RBI-single to plate Hall, again giving the Owls the lead at 3-2.
Saint Louis posted two in the bottom of the frame, and the two teams traded runs in the seventh to move the final score to 5-4.
Temple is now 3-22, 1-6 in Atlantic 10 play while Saint Louis moves to 16-15, 4-3.
Game two is slated for 1:00 p.m. CT on Saturday, April 10.
