ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – Junior Ben White collected his second complete game win of the season as the Temple baseball team topped St. Bonaventure 6-5, Thursday afternoon at Fred Handler Park. White struck out eight over nine, retiring the last nine batters he faced to solidifying the win in his final start of the season.
White (4-6) brought his season strikeout total to 94 with his performance today, ranking seventh most for a single season in Temple history, and the most since Pete Moore fanned 103 in 1999.
The Bonnies did not hesitate to score early, picking up a 1-0 lead off of White in the bottom of the first. A walk and single to the first two batters put runners on the corners, with the Owls trading an out for a run on a nearly completed double play.
Temple quickly took their first lead of the game in the top of the second, scoring two runs on as many hits. Junior Ben Flanary led off with a single to left, scoring from first on a double to left centerfield from classmate Jean Carlos Diaz (2-4, 2B, 3B, 2 RBI). Diaz eventually made his way to third, scoring on a sacrifice fly from junior Byron McKoy (1-3, 2 RBI).
Three runs in the bottom of the frame from the home team quieted the Owls momentum. With two outs and runners on first and third, SBU's Ryan Skellie lifted a home run to left to retake the lead at 4-2.
After a scoreless third, the Owls' bats came back to life. Sophomore Jabair Khan reached base on fielder's choice, putting a man on for a two out double to right center by McKoy. Khan scored from first on the play to cut the SBU lead to 4-3.
Temple regained the lead for good with a two-run fifth. Junior Adrian Perez (2-4, 2B) led off the frame with a double down the left field line and advanced to third on a fly out from redshirt-sophomore Steve Nikorak (1-4, HR, RBI). A walk to junior Ryan Ferguson put runners on the corners, while a groundout by Flanary scored Perez and advanced Ferguson to second. Diaz stepped in a belted a shot down the right field line, hustling around the bags for a triple and scoring Ferguson to give the Owls a 5-4 lead.
White cruised through the Bonnies over the third through sixth innings. He allowed one base runner over the stretch, retiring the side in the third, fourth, fifth innings.
Nikorak gave White and the Owls some breathing room in the seventh, jacking a solo home run to left center for a 6-4 lead.
St. Bonaventure attempted a comeback as Nick Brennen led off with a solo shot to right centerfield. White allowed a single to the next hitter, but settled down to retire the next three batters to get out of the inning and the side in both the eighth and nine to secure the win.
Temple moves to 13-36, 9-16 in A-10 play on the season, while the Bonnies fall to 16-30, 7-18.
Game two of the three game series is slated for 12:00 p.m. on Friday.
