Flanary rips two doubles, one homer with five RBI
Box Score
AMBLER, Pa. – Junior Ben Flanary led an explosive Temple baseball offense in a 17-6 series opening rout of A-10 foe George Washington, going three-for-five with two doubles and a home run for five RBI at Skip Wilson Field on Friday. Redshirt-sophomore Steve Nikorak earned the win for the Owls, lasting five innings with four strikeouts.
Nikorak and redshirt-freshman Steve Visnic were the only two hurlers the Cherry and White needed on the day, as Visnic threw the final four innings only allowing two earned runs.
One run in the first gave the Owls an early lead, but back-to-back five run frames gave them a comfortable lead.
After George Washington put up two to take a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth, Temple responded with a huge five run inning. Flanary ripped a two-run double to right center, scoring sophomores Jabair Khan and Taylor Juran. A single from sophomore Foster Dunigan plated Flanary, and a two-run double from senior Tony Jusino scored Dunigan and McKoy, who singled.
Another two-run frame from the Colonials in the top of the fifth cut the lead, but again the Owls answered with five in the bottom half. Junior Ryan Ferguson led off with a single, advancing to third on a double from Juran. Khan cleared the bases with a towering homer to left center field, and after a single from freshman Dan Dragos, Flanary stepped with the second long ball of the inning, giving Temple an 11-4 lead.
The Owls posted one more in the seventh, and another huge five-run inning in the eighth thanks in part to three errors from the visitors moved the final to 17-6. The Owls' final total was their highest single game scoring performance this season.
The Colonials racked up six misplays on the day, as Temple went perfect in the field.
Temple moves to 9-33, 6-13 in Atlantic 10 play while George Washington falls to 23-21, 11-8.
The two teams will square off again Saturday, with action at Skip Wilson Field beginning at 1:00 p.m.
