Owls rally with two runs in the ninth to win
Box Score
AMBLER, Pa. – Celebrating Senior Day prior to the start of Sunday's Atlantic 10 contest with George Washington, it would only be fitting that the Temple baseball team's lone senior position player come up with a walk-off single in the ninth inning. Tony Jusino did just that, ripping a grounder up the middle to score junior Ryan Ferguson with two outs in the ninth to give the Owls a 7-6 series winning victory at Skip Wilson Field.
The Owls had to battle back once earlier in the contest to regain the lead. Temple matched the Colonials tally with one run in the first, and had to again come from behind to tie the game after George Washington posted one run in the second and third.
Back-to-back singles from junior Adrian Perez (3-5, RBI) and redshirt-sophomore Steve Nikorak (4-5, 2B) set the table for Ferguson (2-4, 2B, 3 RBI), who singled to left center to score Perez. A sacrifice fly to right field from junior Ben Flanary plated Nikorak, tying the game at 3-3.
Junior Ben White (7.0 IP, 9 K, 1 ER) held the Colonials scoreless for the next two frames, while the Temple bats went back to work in the bottom of the fifth.
Perez, Nikorak and Ferguson were again the catalysts for the Owls' two-run fifth, with Perez leading off with a single up the middle. He would advance to third on a double to left center from Nikorak, and both would come around to score on a double down the right field line from Ferguson.
Heading into the sixth, Temple held a 5-3 lead, but three-straight one-run innings from George Washington erased the deficit and put the Owls down one heading into the ninth.
After GW's Tommy Gately retired the first two batters of the final frame, a single from Nikorak sparked a two-out rally. A walk to Ferguson put the winning run on first base, while a clutch single from Flanary scored sophomore Elijah Yarborough (pinch runner) to knot the game at 6-6. Jusino stepped into the box and quickly fell down in the count 0-2, but muscled a fastball back up the middle to plate Ferguson and give the Owls a 7-6 win.
Senior Ryan Thomas threw the final two frames for Temple, picking up the win. GW's Gately took the loss, entering in the ninth to give up the final two runs.
Junior Byron McKoy extended his hit streak to 12 games with a single in the contest, hitting safely in 17 of the Owls' last 18 games.
Temple moves to 10-34, 7-14 in A-10 play on the season while George Washington falls to 24-23, 12-9.
The Owls travel to compete at Villanova on Tuesday, May 11, with first pitch slated for 3:00 p.m.
