Owls’ senior forward returns to team to train against USA Men’s National Team
PHILADELPHIA (8/5/10) – Temple senior forward Lavoy Allen has been added to the USA Men's Select Team that will train against the 2010 USA Men's World Championship Team finalists during training in New York City. Allen replaces forward Howard Thompkins (University of Georgia / Lithonia, Ga.), who withdrew because of a minor left foot injury.
The 2010 USA Basketball Select squad that will participate in the USA World Championship Team training camp in New York is: Allen; JaJuan Johnson (Purdue University / Indianapolis, Ind.); Jon Leuer (University of Wisconsin / Orono, Minn.); Shelvin Mack (Butler University / Lexington, Ky.); Kyle Singler (Duke University / Medford, Ore.); Chris Singleton (Florida State University / Canton, Ga.); Nolan Smith (Duke University / Upper Marlboro, Md.); Mike Tisdale (University of Illinois / Riverton, Ill.); Kemba Walker (University of Connecticut / Bronx, N.Y.); and Chris Wright (University of Dayton / Trotwood, Ohio). The team will be guided by Villanova head coach Jay Wright.
The Select Team members will gather in New York on Aug. 9, and train against the USA World Championship Team finalists on Aug. 10 (1-3 p.m. EDT at John Jay College); Aug. 11 (1-3 p.m. EDT at John Jay College); Aug. 12 (time and site TBD); and Aug. 13 (11 a.m-12:30 p.m. EDT at the New York Knicks practice facility, Tarrytown, N.Y.).
Allen, a first team all-Atlantic 10 Conference and USBWA All-District performer, became the first Temple player to average a double-double since Ollie Johnson accomplished the feat in 1970-71, averaging 11.5 points and 10.7 rebounds per game as a junior in 2009-10. The Morrisville, Pa. native (Pennsbury High) led the team in rebounding, blocks (50) and field goal percentage (.536) while ranking third with 83 assists.
In the Owls' final regular season game, Allen became the 46th player to score 1000 points when he tallied 12 points in a 70-57 win over George Washington (3/6). The two-time A-10 all-defensive team selection became the first Temple player to grab 20 or more rebounds in a gamesince Joe Newman pulled down 24 caroms in 1973 when he pulled down 21 in the team's 65-53 win at La Salle (2/28). His 375 rebounds rank fourth on the Temple all-time list while his 864 boards place seventh on the TU career chart.
Allen, who shared team MVP honors with Ryan Brooks at the Temple awards banquet, helped the Owls to a 29-6 record and a third straight A-10 Championship. Temple was ranked #12 in the final Associated Press poll.
