Postgame Interviews
PHILADELPHIA - Junior guard Ramone Moore netted a game-high 19 points, leading five Owls in double-figures as #19/23 Temple cruised past St. Bonaventure, 83-55, Wednesday night in the Liacouras Center. The Owls are now 12-3, 3-0 in Atlantic 10 play and have won 15 consecutive games in their home building, while St. Bonaventure falls to 9-6, 1-1 in A-10.
It was the second time this season that five Temple players netted double-digit points, the last coming in an 82-49 stomping of Toledo on November 14. Sophomore guard Khalif Wyatt, making his second consecutive start for the injured Juan Fernandez, recorded a career high 15 points (6-9, 3-5 3-ptr) and dished a personal best six assists.
Junior forward Scootie Randall almost made it a career night in points, tallying 17 on three-of-six shooting from three-point land and a perfect six-of-six from the foul line. Senior forward Lavoy Allen tossed in 15 points and five rebounds, while fellow big man junior forward Micheal Eric added 10 points and seven rebounds.
Eric was a constant presence in the paint all night and a huge reason for holding the A-10's leading scorer, junior forward Andrew Nicholson, to 12 points - 10 below his season average (22.4 ppg). Junior guard Michael Davenport led the Bonnies with 13 points and a team-best five rebounds.
Stingy defense allowed Temple to open the game with a 10-2 run. Forcing a turnover on the Bonnies' first possession, Eric got things started with a lengthy jumper to open the scoring, then sinking two free throws to put Temple up 4-0. Wyatt stripped Nicholson and then cashed in himself, driving and making a nice floater.
The Bonnies attempted to slow the Owls with a jumper from Davenport, but Allen erased the bucket with a layup on the other end to make it 8-2 Temple at 17:27. Wyatt added another on a short-range jumper to increase the Owls' lead to 10-2 and force the Bonnies to call a timeout to regroup.
Four straight points out of the stoppage pulled St. Bonaventure back into the game at 10-6, but Randall drained his first three of the game to give the Owls a cushion at 13-6 with 13:57 on the clock.
A trey and a jumper from Davenport sandwiched a swift inside layup from Allen, followed by a tough fade away from Wyatt to put the Owls up 17-11. Davenport was the hot hand for the visitors early on, as he sunk another three to cut the deficit to 17-14 with 12:22 to play.
The first tie of the game resulted from a three by SBU senior guard Ogo Adegboye, but it would not last. Temple burst out to a 8-2 run thanks to threes from Randall and recently inserted sophomore guard T.J. DiLeo. The run was capped by an old-fashioned three point play by Randall, giving the Owls a 26-19 lead with 9:38 left in the half.
Each time the Bonnies came within striking distance, the Owls found a way to build their lead back up. After another three from SBU's Davenport, Temple electrified the crowd with a dunk from Allen, a longball from Wyatt, a trey and a fastbreak dunk from Moore, all in a 10-0 run to give the Owls their largest lead yet at 36-22 with 4:45 remaining in the period.
A two by Nicholson was met by seven unanswered points by Temple - twos from Moore and Eric and a three from Wyatt. Nicholson hit another jumper, but with the final possession of the half Wyatt found Moore on the wing for a trey giving the Owls a 49-28 lead at the break. It was the most points that Temple has scored in a half this season, shooting 61.3% in the stanza.
Temple pushed the margin further early in the second half, even with what looked like an energized St. Bonaventure squad attacking the basket. A pair of free throws by SBU's Nicholson opened the scoring. Wyatt's third three of the game was answered by a three-point play from Adegboye to keep the deficit at 52-33.
The Owls then ripped off a 13-4 run to go up 65-38 with just over 16-minutes to play. Eric, Moore and Randall each had a hand in the stretch of scoring, with Randall accounting for five of the points on a three and two free throws.
Adegboye came up with a jumper to slow the Owls' efforts, but four points from Allen on two jumpers extended the Temple lead further at 69-40 with 14:33 left. The largest lead of the game for the Cherry and White came at the 11:28 mark, when Moore threw down a one-handed dunk to put Temple up 31 points at 74-43.
St. Bonaventure would chip away at the deficit, but never come any closer then down 28 for the remainder of the contest. The Owls' 83 points were the second most the team has posted this season, thanks to significantly improved shooting (30-59, 50.8%) from their last game.
Up next, Temple travels to Duquesne on Saturday, January 15 with tip-off slated for noon. The game will be televised by The Comcast Network. and broadcast by 1210 AM WPHT.
