Thompson wins U20 women's sabre
PHILADELPHIA - The Temple fencing team traveled to Dallas, Texas for a North American Cup tournament conducted January 14-17. The highlight of the weekend was junior Kamali Thompson taking home the gold medal in the Under-20 Women's Sabre event on Monday.
"Kamali fenced exceptionally well. She used very strong actions and confident decision-making all day long." said coach Bradley Baker. "She did a phenomenal job of maintaining her focus and competing for each touch in what was a highly-competitive field."
Thompson went 6-0 in preliminary play, earning the top seed in the direct elimination tableau where, after a first-round bye, she proceeded to win six more times, including a 15-8 result in the gold medal match over home-town favorite Erica Zhao.
Freshman Epiphany Georges also registered a top-level result as a finalist in Under-20 Women's Foil, finishing in 8th place. Sophomore Mikayla Varadi joined Georges in the top 10 of the same event.
The tournament is one of a series of seven national events that are used to select World Championships teams for USA Fencing.
"This tournament helps serve an important purpose for our team as a final tune-up before the collegiate dual meet season kicks off." said Baker. "We're looking forward to a successful campaign against tough competition over the next couple of months."
The next competition for the Owls is the Philadelphia Invitational this Sunday, January 23rd, where Temple will play host to nine opponents, including Penn, Cornell, Northwestern, Duke, UNC, Drew, NJIT, Sacred Heart, Fairleigh Dickinson, and Johns Hopkins. The meets will take place in McGonigle Hall and are free to the public.
