PHILADELPHIA – Kristen McCarthy scored her 1,000th point in just her junior season in helping lead the Temple women's basketball to a 53-43 win against Saint Joseph's in the Liacouras Center on Wednesday evening. The Owls (12-6, 4-0) were led by Shey Peddy with 19 points as they won their fifth straight and remained undefeated in the Atlantic 10.

McCarthy finished with a double-double, scoring 14 points and tying her career-high with 11 rebounds. Peddy went 7-of-8 at the free throw line and recorded a game-high five steals to go along with her 19 points.

Saint Joseph's (11-7, 1-3) was held without a three-pointer for the first time all season. The Hawks got 10 points apiece from Samira Van Grinsven and Kelly Cavallo, with Cavallo adding a team-high 10 rebounds.

Temple took an early 4-0 lead and never trailed in the first half, holding Saint Joseph's to under 30 percent shooting from the field. The Owls shot just 38 percent but took advantage of the Hawks' nine turnovers, scoring nine points.

McCarthy hit a three-pointer to give the Owls a nine-point, 13-4 lead at 13:43, but it would be the Owls' largest lead until near the end of the half. The Hawks later came within three points on two occasions, the last at 19-16 with 6:25 remaining.

With a jumper at 5:38, McCarthy scored her 1,000th career point and also started what would become a 9-2 run that gave Temple a 28-18 lead at the break.

The Owls led by as many as 16 in the second half, 38-22, before Saint Joseph's made a run after the midway point and cut the margin all the way down to five, 43-38 with 6:16 remaining.

Peddy scored five points on consecutive possessions to put Temple back up by double digits, and the Hawks got within no fewer than nine in the final minutes.

Temple will stay in Philadelphia for its road game on Saturday, Jan. 22, traveling to Penn for a 2:00 p.m. Big 5 contest.
