Box Score (PDF)

BRONX, N.Y. - Despite winning the first set 25-22, the Temple volleyball team came up short in the next three sets by scores of 26-24, 25-23 and 25-17 to come away with a 3-1 loss at Fordham (7-20, 4-8 A-10) on Friday night. The Owls (7-18, 3-9 A-10) will continue their road trip with a match at Rhode Island on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m.

Gabriella Matautia had a strong match for the Owls with a match-high 22 kills along with eight digs. Elyse Burkert recorded a double-double of 11 kills and 15 digs while Tiffany Connatser also notched a double-double with 41 assists and 15 digs.

Temple led by as many as five points at 17-12 in the first set, but Fordham came back to tie the score at 18-18. Three more ties followed, the last at 22-22 before two attack errors on the Rams combined with an ace for Collin Wallace gave Temple a 25-22 win in the set and a 1-0 lead in the match.

The Owls trailed by three on a few occasions in the second set and had to make an impressive comeback when they found themselves down 23-20. Burket and Matautia each came up with a kill during Temple's 4-0 run that gave the Owls set point at 24-23, but that's when Fordham took over. The Rams came up with a kill to save the set point, and an error on Temple gave Fordham a set point of its own, which saw Brittany Daulton knock down a kill to even the match at 1-1.

Fordham carried the momentum through to the third set and led by as many as eight points at 17-9, but the Owls found life once again and rallied all the way back. Wallace, Matautia and Emily Frazer all came up with multiple big points in a 14-6 run that tied the set at 23-23, but after the comeback a win was not to be as the Rams came up with back-to-back blocks.

Heading into set four with a 2-1 lead in the match, Fordham once again took a lead but this time held it throughout as the Rams displayed their best hitting of the night with 12 kills and only three errors.
