Women's Fencing Begins Its Season in Annual Temple Open

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – For the 32nd straight year, fencers from all around the nation packed into McGonigle Hall, as the Temple women's fencing team held its annual Temple Open this weekend. The tournament is the largest individual collegiate competition in the country and this year included 32 different universities and almost 600 individual competitors.
Saturday's competitions opened with foil in the morning, where Temple had four of its fencers participate over the course of the day. Junior Mikayla Varadi and sophomore Epiphany Georges led the Owls in foil as they tied for third place overall. Senior Alyssa Lomuscio, who was an All-American a season ago, was also a top 10 finalist in foil while her classmate Danielle Jones rounded out Temple's participation in foil, placing 30th.
Sophomore Chantal Montrose was Temple's top finisher in epee with an 11th place finish. Fellow sophomore Kimberly Howell took 20th place on the day and senior Krystal Jones, placed 37th in her return to the sport after a three-year hiatus.
Saber got underway in the early afternoon. Senior Kamali Thompson, who was the overall winner in the same event last year, tied for third place. Freshman Tiki Kastor had a strong day in her first saber events as a Temple Owl, as she placed fifth among all individuals. Kastor's ranking was just ahead of freshman Lauren Rangel-Friedman who finished in sixth place. Sophomore Andrea Haley also had a strong finish for Temple in saber, as she ended her day in 10th place. In her first collegiate fencing event, freshman Emily Dodson wrapped up saber competition in 35th place.
The Temple women's fencing team returns to action at the Penn State Open on November 19.
