STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Following two preseason open tournaments, Temple Fencing made its way to State College, Pa. for the second time in as many weeks to offically begin the regular season on Saturday at Penn State with meets against Vassar, Harvard, Sacred Heart, and NYU.
The Owls kicked off the season with a 23-4 win over Vassar, led by a 9-0 performance by the sabre squad. The second round of the meet saw the Cherry and White fall to perennial power Harvard, led by defending NCAA Foil Champion Alexander Keifer and NCAA Sabre Bronze medalist Caroline Vloka, by an 11-16 score. Rebounding, the team defeated Sacred Heart 19-8 and concluded the day with a 22-5 performance against NYU.
The foil squad led the way, winning all four meets. Senior Alyssa Lomuscio (7-1) and sophomore Epiphany Georges (10-1) were nearly perfect on the day, each only dropping a single bout. Junior Mikayla Varadi went 9-2, while senior Danielle Jones went 3-3.
In sabre, senior Kamali Thompson (9-1) and sophomore Andrea Haley (5-0) set the pace. Three freshmen experienced their first collegiate dual meets, as Emily Dodson (4-1), Lauren Rangel-Friedman (5-3), and Tiki Kastor (4-4) rounded out the squad.
Sophomores Chantal Montrose and Kimberly Howell posted identical 9-3 records in epee. Senior Krystal Jones went 1-11 in her first team competition in the weapon.
"This was an important early season test for us." said Assistant Coach Bradley Baker. "Especially for our freshmen, it helped show them what collegiate team matches are like."
Head Coach Nikki Franke commented, "All in all, it was a good day. It gives us a good idea of what we need to work on as we prepare for the remainder of the season. I was very happy to see how well we worked together as team."
Now with a meet under their belts, the Owls will look to its next meet, which doesn't occur until after the start of the New Year when they host the Alumnae Meet in Pearson-McGonigle Hall on Jan. 8.
