PHILADELPHIA- On Saturday, Temple University honored four graduating seniors in the final dual meets of their careers at the Temple Invitational. Following a brief ceremony at the start of the day McGonigle Hall was the site of meets between six schools. Nine of the ten participating teams are ranked in the top 10 in the latest coaches poll for men's or women's fencing. Seniors for Temple include captain Kamali Thompson, foil squad leader Alyssa Lomuscio, Danielle Jones, and Krystal Jones.
The Cherry and White started the day with a 7-20 loss to #2 Penn State. Following a round off and lunch break, the Owls came back fired up and jumped out to a large lead against #5 ranked St. John's, finishing out the meet with a 16-11 upset. Temple's third match was a 15-12 win over Duke, avenging a loss against the Blue Devils two weeks ago in Durham, NC. The day concluded with a loss (9-18) to #3 ranked Princeton.
Leading the way for Temple were Thompson (9-2 in sabre), Epiphany Georges (6-2 in foil), and Jillian Bratton (7-4 in epee).
Joining Thompson on the sabre squad were Tiki Kastor (3-7), Lauren Rangel-Friedman (2-4), Tasia Ford (1-6), Andrea Haley (1-0) and Emily Dodson (0-1). The squad led the way against St. John's (7-2), while falling to the three other teams. In addition to Georges, Lomuscio (4-7), and D. Jones (0-2), the foil squad, which went 2-2 on the day, included Mikayla Varadi (5-5) and Teagan Kilpatrick (1-4). On the epee squad with Bratton and K. Jones were Kimberly Howell (4-7) and Chantal Montrose (4-8).
The Temple Invitational concludes 2011-12 regular season action for the team, which ends the year with a 24-8 record. Next week the Owls compete at the National Intercollegiate Women's Fencing Association (NIWFA) Championships, where they will look to extend a 16-year winning streak for overall team champion, as well as contest for squad and individual titles.
The following week the team travels to Lafayette College for the Mid-Atlantic/South NCAA Regional Tournament, looking to qualify to the NCAA National Championships, to be hosted by Ohio State University at the end of March.
