PHILADELPHIA - The 2011-12 season has arrived, and Temple women's basketball will begin its schedule at home against Miami (OH) on Friday, Nov. 11 at 7:00 p.m. in McGonigle Hall. Fans should take note that the Owls, coming off a 24-9 season and a second-straight NCAA Second Round appearance, will not return home for another game until December.
Live stats for every home game will be available HERE, and a live webcast of Friday's game can be seen HERE.
THE OPENING TIP
•The Owls, coming off a 24-9 season, return two of their top three leading scorers from last season in seniors Shey Peddy (team-best 14.1 ppg) and Kristen McCarthy (13.2 ppg)...Both were named to the 2011-12 Atlantic 10 Preseason First Team.
•Head Coach Tonya Cardoza, the 2010-11 Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year, returns for her fourth season with a record of 70-28.
•Temple had won eight straight season openers from 2002-2009 before having that streak broken with an 84-75 home loss to #7 Ohio State a year ago.
•Both McCarthy and Peddy eclipsed the 1,000-point mark last year, with McCarthy now at 1,204 for her career (11th all-time at Temple) and Peddy at 1,319 in her career (including two years at DI Wright State).
•Temple was 4-1 last season against MAC opponents with wins against Akron, Buffalo, Northern Illinois and Ohio along with a loss to Eastern Michigan...Two years ago the Owls went 5-0 against the MAC.
•Last year's team shattered the all-time three-point record for a season, making 216 three-pointers...The previous record was 172 in 2009-10.
•Temple reached the 20-win plateau for the eighth straight season in 2010-11, finishing at 24-9 overall...The year before, Temple's 25 wins tied for the second-most all-time, with 28 being the record (2004-05).
•Miami is coming off an 11-19 season in which the RedHawks struggled in MAC play, going 3-13 and tying for sixth place in the East Division...The team will be more experienced this time around as it returns all five starters and all 10 letterwinners under 15th-year head coach Maria Fantanarosa.
SERIES RECORD
Temple and Miami are tied 1-1 in the all-time series. The teams last met in January, 2008, a meeting which the RedHawks won on their home court by a score of 70-53. Two seasons earlier, in December of 2006, the Owls earned an 88-70 win at home.
OWLS RECEIVING VOTES IN BOTH POLLS
The Owls are receiving votes in both national preseason polls; 10 votes in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll and four votes in the AP Poll.
McCARTHY IS HEAD OF THE CLASS
On November 4, it was announced that senior Kristen McCarthy was one of 30 candidates selected for the Lowe's 2011-12 Women's Basketball Senior CLASS Award, which recognizes notable achievements in four areas- classroom, character, community and competition.
The 10 finalists will be announced in late January, at which time a national ballot will be available to fans. To learn more, visit the website at www.seniorclassaward.com.
PEDDY THEFT
Shey Peddy set the program's all-time record for steals in a single season last year with 104, recording at least one steal in all but one game. Her 3.2 steals per game ranked second in the A-10 and tied for 10th in NCAA Division I.
TAKING CARE OF THE BALL
Temple did an impressive job taking care of the ball last season, as the Owls averaged just 13.6 turnovers per game to rank sixth among all teams in NCAA Division I.
PRESEASON RESPECT
Kristen McCarthy and Shey Peddy earned A-10 Preseason honors, as both were named to the First Team. Peddy, an A-10 First Team selection last year, led the Owls with 14.1 ppg. McCarthy was an A-10 Second Team selection a year ago and ranked third on the team with 13.2 ppg.
THREE-POINT STREAK
The final game of the 2008-09 season marked the last time Temple did not hit at least one three-pointer as a team. The Owls have now achieved that feat for 67 straight games.
The streak very nearly hit snags in two of Temple's games last year- at Saint Joseph's (Feb. 23) and vs. Dayton (March 6), as the now-graduated Qwedia Wallace hit the only three in both games with under a minute left each time.
PROGRAM RECORD 3'S LAST YEAR
Last year's team shattered the all-time three-point record for a season, making 216. The previous record was 172 in 2009-10.
NOW THE TEAM TO BEAT
After four years of finishing higher than predicted in the A-10, the Owls are finally picked first in the conference in a tie with Dayton. Last season Temple was picked third and ended up second, and two years ago the Owls were picked fifth and went on to tie for second.
