Under the direction of sixth-year head coach Fran Dunphy, Temple has recovered from a loss to starting center Micheal Eric (10.5 ppg., 11.3 rpg.) to win its last three games. Most recently the Owls took down Philadelphia Big 5 rival Villanova, 78-67 on Dec. 10, behind a career-high 32 points from senior guard Ramone Moore. The reining Atlantic 10 and Big 5 co-Player of the Week leads the team and ranks second in the Atlantic 10 Conference in scoring with an 18.4 average.
Two other Temple guards, junior Khalif Wyatt (14.6 ppg.) and senior Juan Fernandez (12.5 ppg.), also top double figures with Wyatt leading the squad in steals (12) and Fernandez in three-pointers (18). Junior Rahlir Hollis-Jefferson (9.4 ppg., 6.3 rpg,) and redshirt freshman Anthony Lee (5.1 ppg., 6.9 rpg.) start in the front court. The Owls have sported a four-guard lineup at times with sophomore Aaron Brown (7.4 ppg.), redshirt junior T.J. DiLeo (3.8 ppg,) and freshman Will Cummings (3.0 ppg.) all in the mix.
Texas, under the direction of 14th-year head coach Rick Barnes, has one of the youngest teams in the nation this season with six players on its 11 -man roster being true freshmen. Four freshmen are among the Longhorns top five scorers with three - Myck Kabongo (10.1 ppg.), Julien Lewis (10.0 ppg.) and Jonathan Holmes (9.5 ppg.) – in the starting five. Junior guard J'Covan Brown leads UT in scoring (18.9) with freshman reserve guard Sheldon McClellan (12.0 ppg.) ranking second on the team.
The Longhorns are riding a six-game win streak following Tuesday's 93-40 win over visiting Nicholls State. The team's lone losses came against Oregon State (100-95 OT) and North Carolina State (77-74) in the TicketCity Legends Classic Championship Round held at the Meadowlands.
