PHILADELPHIA - A sold out crowd at the Liacouras Center witnessed history on Sunday afternoon, as senior Lavoy Allen pulled down 12 boards to become Temple's all-time leader in rebounding, guiding the #23/25 Owls to a 66-52 win over Atlantic 10/Big 5 rival Saint Joseph's. With the win, Temple improves to 21-5, 11-2 in the A-10 and 2-1 in Big 5 play now having won 21-straight games in its home arena.
Allen needed 10 rebounds heading into today's contest to break the mark held by Owls' radio color analyst John Baum (1,042, 1966-69), and with 12 boards in the game he now owns 1,045 for his career. The Morrisville, Pa., native also posted 14 points to mark his sixth double-double of the season.
Junior Ramone Moore led the Owls and tied for the game-high with 17 points, while two other Owls - junior Juan Fernandez and sophomore Rahlir Jefferson - tallied in double figures. It was Jefferson's sixth career game scoring in double-figures and the second consecutive for Fernandez.
Temple played today without two of its regular starters in Micheal Eric and Scootie Randall. Freshman Aaron Brown made his first career start this afternoon in place of the injured Randall, who sat out today with a right foot injury. Brown added two assists in eight minutes of play.
Saint Joseph's, now 7-19, 0-4 in Big 5 play, was led by 17 points by freshman Langston Galloway and 11 points by sophomore Carl Jones. Galloway also tied for the team-high in rebounding with senior Charoy Bentley, each posting five.
The Owls jumped out to a 9-4 lead at 15:20 on a 6-0 run, sparked by a jumper from Allen and a pair of layups by Moore. Galloway erased the deficit with a personal 5-0 run to tie the game a 9-9, hitting a fade away jumper and a three from the top of the arc.
A pair of free throws by Idris Hilliard gave the Hawks a 12-11 lead, but Temple was quick to respond as Moore nailed a trey and Fernandez hit three from the free throw line to start a 11-0 run to put the Owls up 20-11 with 10:23 to play. Jefferson extended the run with a jumper in front of the visitor's bench, while a three in the opposite corner by sophomore Khalif Wyatt pushed the run to double-digits.
Saint Joseph's would make it a two-point game just minutes later on a 7-0 run, keeping it a one possession game until the Owls managed to extend their lead to nine, 30-21, with 3:16 left in the first. Back-to-back threes from Wyatt and Fernandez ended an 8-1 TU run.
The Owls would go into the break with a 35-23 lead, thanks to a 5-0 run to close the half. Moore led all scorers in the stanza with 10 points, while Jefferson pulled down a period-high six rebounds.
Temple maintained a double-digit lead throughout the second half, pushing the margin to 16 points with a 9-4 run early in the period (14:18). Fernandez sparked the rally with a three, followed by six straight points from Jefferson. The Owls held the Hawks scoreless for over four minutes (16:25-11:59) during the run.
The scoring would halt temporarily for Temple as well, as the Owls would not score for a four minute stretch (14:18-9:46). Saint Joseph's took advantage of the drought to make it an eight point game on threes by Galloway and Jones, and a two from Bentley.
Allen halted the Hawks momentum with a one-handed dunk, starting an 8-2 run midway through the period to give TU a 12-point lead (54-42, 7:44). A pair of free throws by Moore and another jumper by Allen sandwiched a lay up from SJU's Jones in the run, which was capped by a one-handed jam by Allen on a behind the back pass by Fernandez.
History was made with 6:30 left on the clock, as Allen pulled down his 10th rebound of the game to move into sole possession of first place all-time on the Temple rebounding list. The Owls kept Saint Joseph's down by double-digits for the remainder of the contest, never allowing the Hawks closer than 12.
Temple travels to Durham, N.C., for a showdown with ACC foe #5/5 Duke on February 23 (7:00 p.m.). The game will be televised nationally on ESPN2 and can be heard on 1210 AM WPHT.
