PHILADELPHIA - The #7 Temple women's fencing team hosted four top 10 schools in McGonigle Hall on Sunday for the Temple Invitational. Prior to the start of competition, the Owls celebrated the careers of four seniors - Audrey Barroso, Samantha Pascarelli, Alyssa Lombardi and Grace Wu.
“Senior Day is always a day filled with mixed emotions," commented head coach Nikki Franke. "We are happy to see how far our seniors have progressed and how much they've matured but we're also sad as we realize their time with us is coming to an end."
The first round saw a 15-12 victory over #9 Duke, avenging a loss from January. In round two, Temple fell to #3 Princeton by a score of 10-17. Regrouping after a round off, the Owls upset #4 St. John's 15-12. The final round featured a match-up against defending NCAA Champions, #5 Penn State. In a meet that came down to the final bout, Penn State emerged victorious by a score of 13-14, flipping the result obtained when Temple upset the Nittany Lions in State College last month.
As a squad, foil once again led the way, going 3-1, including 8-1 victories over Duke and Penn State. The individual top performers were Kamali Thompson (10-2), who posted perfect (3-0) records against St. John's and Penn State in sabre, and Alyssa Lomuscio (9-2), who posted perfect records against Duke, St. John's and Penn State in foil.
"All in all, the team did a good job against some very stiff competition," said Franke. "It was great to pick up the win against Duke, who had beaten us earlier this season, and to beat #4 St. John's. However, it was disappointing to lose to Penn State who we were very capable of beating again. Unfortunately, we let that one slip away."
The Temple Invitational marks the end of regular season play for the Owls. On Saturday, March 5th, Temple travels to Johns Hopkins University for the 83rd annual NIWFA (National Intercollegiate Women's Fencing Association) Championships.
