Owls' spot unchanged in final poll of the season
PHILADELPHIA - The Temple women's fencing team will enter the NCAA Championships as the seventh-ranked team in the nation, according to the most recent USFCA College Fencing Coaches' Poll. Juniors Kamali Thompson and Alyssa Lomuscio, along with sophomore Mikayla Varadi and freshman Chantal Montrose, comprise the foursome that will represent the Owls at the big dance.
Temple has been ranked in the top 10 all season, debuting as the ninth-ranked team in the nation. The Owls climbed the ranks after several upset wins, nearly posting a .500 record (5-7) against teams in the top 10.
Varadi and Lomuscio are the two competitors in foil for the Cherry and White. Varadi will be making her second trip to the NCAA Championships, placing 18th at last year's. Lomuscio also makes her second trip and first as an Owl. Lomuscio placed 18th at the 2009 Championships as a freshman at Fairleigh Dickinson.
Thompson is making her third consecutive appearance in sabre at the NCAA Championships. Placing 16th as a freshman in 2009, she went on to improve her finish to 14th in 2010. Montrose will be competing for the first time and representing Temple as the lone epeeist.
Freshman Epiphany Georges was originally penned in as a foilist for the Owls, but due to injury was replaced by Varadi. Freshman Teagan Kilpatrick was also selected as an alternate for the championship.
