2.4.11 | Women's Basketball

Owls (16-6, 7-0) face a tough test against the Dukes (19-3, 6-1) at the Palumbo Center

Game Notes vs. Duquesne

PHILADELPHIA - Looking for its 10th straight win and to remain undefeated in the Atlantic 10, the Temple women's basketball team will face a tough test at Duquesne on Saturday, Feb. 5 at 2:00 p.m. The Dukes (19-3, 6-1) have won four straight since their lone A-10 loss.

Duquesne will celebrate National Women in Sports Day as well as "Think Pink" for Saturday's game. Live stats are available HERE, and a free audio broadcast is available HERE. Subscribers can see a live webcast HERE.

Temple has won nine straight, ranking as its longest win streak since the 2006-07 season. The Owls are one of two undefeated teams in the Atlantic 10 along with #7 Xavier. Temple is averaging 27.6 points per game more than its conference opponents so far. The Owls' three leading scorers are about as balanced as it gets, with junior Kristen McCarthy averaging 13.1 points per game followed by Shey Peddy and Qwedia Wallace at 13.0 ppg.

Duquesne is19-3 overall and 6-1 in the A-10, and the Dukes are receiving 24 votes in this week's AP Poll. They have won four straight since a home loss to Richmond on Jan. 19, but needed OT at UMass on Feb. 2 to get an 84-79 victory.  Junior guard Alex Gensler leads the Dukes with 13.2 points per game and 49 three-pointers.

SERIES RECORD
Temple is 29-11 all-time against Duquesne with a 12-1 record over the last 10 years. Duquesne's lone win was a 68-57 decision in Pittsburgh in 2009. Temple earned a 52-41 win at home last year and also defeated the Dukes 63-54 in the A-10 quarterfinals.

OWLS SET 3-POINT SINGLE GAME RECORD
With 14 three-pointers in their win vs. Richmond on Jan. 29, the Owls surpassed the previous program record of 13, set a year ago. Kristen McCarthy was a perfect 5-of-5 from three-point range in the win, but it was senior Danielle Brinkley who was the hero.

Coming in off the bench with a previous career high of three points, Brinkley sank two three's to both tie the previous record and break it.

SCHOOL RECORD 3-POINT PERCENTAGE
In the game following a program-record 14 three-pointers, the Owls were record-setting once again by draining 9-of-11 from behind the arc in their win vs. Saint Louis on Feb. 2. The 81.8 pct. is the tops all-time, men or women.

TOPS IN A-10 DEFENSE
In the conference-only stats, Temple is dominating in the defensive categories. The Owls are first in scoring defense (44.9 ppg), scoring margin (27.6 ppg), field goal pct. defense (.322), 3-pt pct. defense (.217), blocks (6.0 pg), steals (11.3 pg), turnover margin (+8.6) and assist/turnover ratio (1.4).

Shey Peddy is #1 in steals for league games (4.1 spg) and Victoria Macaulay is #2 in blocks for league games (1.9 bpg).

PEDDY THEFT
Shey Peddy, who has recorded at least one steal in 21 of Temple's 22 games, ranks second in the A-10 with 3.0 steals per game (4.1 in conference games to rank first). Peddy recorded an impressive eight steals in the Owls' win at UMass, marking her career high.

Peddy also ranks 18th in NCAA Division I with her 3.0 spg. At 67 steals for the season, she stands just four away from breaking into the all-time single-season steals list at Temple.

THREE GRAND
An impressive three Owls (Temple's three leading scorers) have reached the 1,000-point milestone this season. Junior Shey Peddy was first, hitting the mark on Dec. 21. Her current 1,140 points include two years playing at Division I Wright State. Junior Kristen McCarthy was next, reaching the milestone in a win vs. Saint Joseph's on Jan. 19, and has now scored 1,057 points to rank 15th all-time at Temple.

Senior Qwedia Wallace led the Owls with 21 points in a win at UMass on Jan. 26 to hit exactly 1,000 for her career. She was the 19th player in the history of the program to achieve the feat, and now ranks 17th with 1,031 points.

AP VOTES
For the first time since early in the season, Temple is receiving votes in the AP Poll. With four votes the Owls are ranked ninth of the 12 teams not in the top 25. Duquesne is the third team receiving votes with 24.

ON THE OUTSIDE LOOKING IN
Surprisingly for a team that had never been a real three-point threat, this year's squad has proven very capable behind the arc and is averaging 7.1 three's per game (2nd in the A-10). The Owls sank 14 vs. Richmond, 12 vs. #7 Ohio State and made 10 four other times (at #13/13 UCLA, vs. Rutgers, at Ohio and vs. Akron).

LOW TURNOVER RATE
The Owls rank 9th in the nation for fewest turnovers at 14.0 per game. After just once recording fewer than 10 turnovers in 2009-10, Temple has done so six times already this year, with a season-low of seven vs. #7 Ohio State.

DURKIN CONNECTION
Temple assistant Dan Durkin is more than a little familiar with Duquesne, having been the women's head coach there for 14 years from 1993 to 2007. Durkin was the 1998 A-10 Coach of the Year and produced two WNBA draft picks.

PEDDY EARNS A-10 PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Shey Peddy was named both the Atlantic 10 and Philadelphia Big 5 Women's Basketball Player of the Week on Jan. 31. Peddy paced the Owls to an unbeaten 2-0 week and filled the stat sheet, averaging 15.5 points, 7.0 assists, 6.5 steals and 5.0 rebounds in both games, while shooting 52 percent (12-23) from the field and 100 percent (5-5) at the line. She tallied a career-high eight steals at UMass and a career-high nine assists vs. Richmond.

The A-10 honor is the first for Peddy this season and also the first for Temple, as the Owls have been very well-balanced on offense.

STEAMROLLING
Over Temple's nine-game win streak, just two have been by a margin of less than 10 points. Since their three-point win at Charlotte, the Owls have averaged 31.7 more points per game than their six A-10 opponents.
