PHILADELPHIA - Behind a solid day at the plate from the Owls bats, senior Ben White put in eight strong innings of work to lead the Temple baseball team past Cornell, 9-6, on Friday afternoon at La Salle's DeVincent Field. Temple improves to 6-5 on the year while Cornell remains winless at 0-5.
White (2-2) demonstrated why he is tops in the Temple rotation today, striking out a season-high nine batters and walking just two. He gave up two runs, one in the second and fifth, while scattering nine hits. Redshirt-junior Steve Nikorak came on for the final inning, battling through some borderline calls at the plate to help close out the game.
Cornell starter Corey Pappel (0-2) gave up three runs on eight hits to the Owls, lasting six innings. Houston Hawley and Joe Sinopoli combined to close out the game, giving up a combined five runs.
Freshman Will Remillard (2-3, SF) led the Owls with four RBI, looking more and more comfortable every game behind the plate. Remillard came through with a pair of clutch hits in the game. senior Byron McKoy (3-4, 3B) backed his efforts with two RBI, going three-for-four with one run scored.
After White snuck out of the first inning with no runs allowed, McKoy was the spark the Owls needed in the bottom of the first. The Charlotte, N.C., native roped a triple well over the centerfielder's head, scoring on a double from senior Adrian Perez (2-4, RBI, 2B).
Cornell tied the game up in the top of the second, but Temple regained the lead in the bottom of the frame. Junior Taylor Juran singled and Remillard reached on a free pass to put runners on first and second, with the bases being loaded after junior Jabair Khan was hit by a pitch. McKoy stepped in and singled to right, getting caught in between first and second for an out.
The Owls built their lead with one more in the third. Nikorak (2-5, 3 R, 2B) led off the frame with a single back up the middle, advancing to second after sophomore Dan Dragos was plunked. A walk to Juran loaded the bases again, with a run scoring after Remillard rolled into a double play. Temple exited the inning with a 3-1 lead.
One more from the Big Red in the top of the fifth seemed to bring the visitors back into the game, but Temple would have none of that as the Owls matched their run with one in the bottom of the inning. Nikorak reached base on a error at third, eventually moving over to third and scoring on a single by Remillard to put Temple back up 4-2.
From there, White began to loosen up and take control on the hill. He allowed just three base runners over the next three innings, leaving the game with a 9-2 lead thanks to two runs in the eighth and three in the ninth from his offense.
Nikorak greeted Cornell reliever Hawley with a double to start off the seventh, advancing to second after Dragos was hit for the second time today. Sophomore David Hall put down a tremendous bunt just feet from home plate on the third baseline, reaching safely to load the bases. Remillard flew out to right to plate Nikorak, with Dragos eventually scoring after McKoy was hit by a pitch.
Three in the eight gave the Owls plenty of comfort room for the final three outs. Senior Ryan Ferguson led off with a single to the right side, extending his team-best hit streak to 11 games. Freshman Bobby Heitzman entered to run for Ferguson, advancing to second on a ground out by Nikorak and scoring on a clutch single by pinch-hitter Rafael Cordero. After Hall reached base on an error, Remillard roped a 3-2 single to right field to plate two.
Cornell managed to pull four runs out of Nikorak in the ninth, but the Owls' stopper shutdown the rally and secured the 9-6 win for the Owls.
Temple remains in action this weekend, returning to La Salle's DeVincent tomorrow for a meeting with Mount St. Mary's at 1:00 p.m. Junior Brant Norlander is slated to start for the Owls, going against the Mount's Brett Moore.
