Ferguson extends hit streak to 25 games to tie Temple record

Box Score

DAYTON, Ohio
- The Temple baseball team took an early lead in its series opener at Dayton, but nine unanswered runs from the Flyers handed the Owls an 9-1 loss, Friday afternoon at Time Warner Cable Stadium.  Temple is now 14-9 overall, 1-3 in Atlantic 10 play while Dayton improves to 13-12, 1-0 in A-10 play.

Senior Ryan Ferguson (1-3, RBI) kept his hit streak alive with a single in the first to extend the mark to 25 games, tying the Temple all-time record set by Mike Burton during his junior season in 1989.  Senior Byron McKoy recorded the only extra base hit on the day for the Owls, going one-for-three with a double.

Senior Ben White's (3-4) day ended after six innings of work, striking out six hitters and allowing eight runs.  The Parkesburg, Pa., native turned it over to redshirt-sophomore Steve Visnic with no outs in the seventh, with Visnic giving up no runs and closing out the frame.  Visnic secured two outs in the ninth, being relieved by freshman Ryan Davis, who made his first appearance since February 19 at North Carolina Central.  Davis allowed one run and secured the final out of the eighth.

Dayton starter Cameron Hobson (4-2) kept the Owls off-balance all game, striking out 12 batters and giving up six hits over 7.2 innings.  He gave up just one run in the first inning, throwing the remaining 6.2 innings scoreless before being relieved.  Sophomore Trent Haughn shut things down for the Flyers, throwing the final 1.1 innings scoreless.

The Owls took a 1-0 lead in the first, as McKoy led off the game with a double to left center.  The speedy outfielder swiped third to get in better scoring position, plating on a single by Ferguson.

Dayton answered with a pair in the bottom half of the first to take a 2-1 lead, posting two more runs in the third and fifth to command a 6-1 lead to that point.  Temple had a solid chance in the third to put some runs on the board, having runners on first and second with two-outs but unable to move them further.

The Flyers moved their lead to 8-1 with a two-run homer by senior Jonathan Castine in the bottom of the seventh, adding one more in the eighth.  Temple would strand three over the final three frames, unable to plate another run to cut into the deficit.

Game two of the three game series begins at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday at Time Warner Cable Stadium, with Temple junior Brant Norlander going against Dayton junior Burny Mitchem.
