DAYTON, Ohio - It came down to his final at bat in the Temple baseball team's contest at Dayton on Saturday afternoon, but senior Ryan Ferguson managed to muscle a single into left in the ninth inning to snap the Temple school record now with a 26-game hit streak. The Owls were outdone in the middle game of the team's series against the Flyers, rallying in the final frame only to fall 9-7 at Time Warner Cable Stadium.

Ferguson (1-4, RBI, SF) was hitless going into the final inning despite reaching base twice up to that point. The Temple rally gave the Glen Mills, Pa., native one more crack at recording a hit, as Ferguson stepped in and ripped a two-out single into left to break the Temple record now with a 26-game hit streak, breaking the previous mark of 25-games set in 1989 by Mike Burton.
Freshman Will Remillard led the Owls going two-for-three with a double and two RBI. Senior Adrian Perez was three-for-five, while junior Cameron Green and redshirt-junior Steve Nikorak each had a pair of hits. Senior Byron McKoy added a double in the contest, now tied for fifth place all-time in Temple history with Sean Barksdale, owning 222 career hits.
Junior Brant Norlander (3-1) gave the Owls 5.2 innings today, striking out four but allowing six earned runs. Junior Jimmy Devine relieved Norlander, throwing one inning of one-hit ball allowing just one run to plate. Redshirt-sophomore Steve Visnic tossed a scoreless inning of work, being relieved by junior Tyler Horst with two outs in the bottom of the eighth. Horst gave up one run in the frame before retiring the final out.
For Dayton, junior Burny Mitchem (1-2) went eight strong, striking out eight batters and giving up one earned run. The Owls posted seven hits on the big righty, who was relieved in the ninth by senior Tim Corbey.
Dayton took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second, but the Owls responded to make it a one-run game with a pair in the top of the third. Perez singled to left to lead off the frame, reaching second on an error at short on a grounder hit by Ferguson. Nikorak bunted to reach base on a fielder's choice, with Perez being throw out at third. Remillard stepped in with two outs and ripped a double, plating Nikorak and Ferguson to make it a 3-2 game.
The Flyers pulled away with three-straight scoring innings, posting one in the bottom of the fourth, two in the fifth, and one in the sixth and seventh. Temple managed one more run in the sixth, as McKoy doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Ferguson. The Owls stranded two in the seventh, having runners on first and second with two outs.
One more in the bottom of the eight would put the Owls down 9-3, but Temple had some left in the tank for the ninth and took advantage of Dayton reliever Corbey. Junior Jabair Khan sparked the rally with a one-out single through the right side, advancing to third on a single by sophomore Henry Knabe. Khan would plate on a double to center by Green, with a single by Perez scoring the pair.
Ferguson's final chance to keep his run alive came as the next batter, extending his streak and the rally with a single to left center to put runners on first and third. Nikorak singled to score the runner on third, Yarborough, moving Ferguson to second. With two outs, UD junior Mike Hauschild relieved Corbey and forced junior Taylor Juran to ground out to end the game.
The series wraps tomorrow with a noon start time. Freshman Matt Hockenberry takes the hill for the Owls, going against junior Tim Bury of Dayton.
