McKoy moves into fourth place all-time in hits, Ferguson's streak snapped

Box Score

DAYTON, Ohio
- A three-RBI day from senior Byron McKoy and a strong pitching performance over the final four frames from redshirt-junior Steve Nikorak propelled the Temple baseball team to a 17-11 win over Dayton in the team's series finale at Time Warner Cable Stadium on Sunday afternoon.  The Owls improve their overall record to 15-10, sitting 2-4 in Atlantic 10 play while the Flyers fall to 14-14, 2-1 in A-10 play.

McKoy spearheaded a potent Owls' offense that posted 17 runs and 16 hits on the day.  The Charlotte, N.C., native went two-for-four with a homer, driving in three and scoring once.  He is now on a 10-game hit streak and in sole-possession of fourth place all-time on the Temple career hit list, owning 224.  Junior Cameron Green had a fine day at the plate as well, going three-for-six with two RBI and tying teammate senior Ben Flanary with a game-high four runs scored.

Green led three Owls with three hits, joined by sophomore Daniel Dragos who went three-for-five and junior Jabair Khan who went three-for-five with a double and three runs scored.  Senior Ryan Ferguson (0-6, RBI) was held hitless in the contest, seeing his school-record 26-game hit streak snap today.

Freshman Matt Hockenberry started and lasted 2.2 innings, giving up four runs over the time.  The Owls went to the bullpen from there and started with junior Jimmy Devine, who had a rough 0.2 innings giving up three runs.  Redshirt-sophomore Steve Visnic secured one out in relief giving up one run, handing it over to freshman Zach Batchelor who gave up a pair over 1.1 innings to earn his first collegiate win.  Nikorak sealed things up over the final four, allowing no earned runs while fanning six to earn his second save of the year.

Temple roughed up Dayton starter Doug Hauschild over the first three, recording seven runs and eight hits.  Hauschild gave way to Tim Bury, who was not helped by the Dayton defense and allowed three runs, none of which were earned.

After Dayton took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, the Owls' offense surged for a five-run second to take their first lead of the game.  Dragos started things off with a single to right, advancing to second on a passed ball and moving to third on a single by Khan.  Green stepped in and plated both on a towering shot to left field, giving Temple a 3-0 lead.  The Owls' rally picked up again as Flanary singled through the left side, moving to second after sophomore Elijah Yarborough walked.  McKoy was given a free pass after he attempted to sacrifice bunt, moving Yarborough to third and scoring Flanary.  Ferguson grounded out to score Yarborough, with the inning ending on the next batter.

The Flyers picked one up in the bottom of the frame, but the Owls did them one better and added a pair in the third to go up 7-2.  Green punched a two-out single into left to start the rally, moving to third on a double by Flanary.  Yarborough came up as the next batter and singled through the left side to clear the bases.

Still, Dayton would not go away and went up one on a four-run fourth.  Temple would not be outdone on the day, however, posting three in the top of the fifth, and four more in the top of the sixth to go ahead for good.  Nikorak was the catalyst for the big sixth, leading off with a double and scoring on a single by Dragos.  Khan doubled to start things back up and move Dragos to third.  Khan would take Dragos' spot after he scored on a Green grounder that was misplayed, scoring on a sacrifice fly by Flanary.  Green moved over and plated on a wild pitch to give The Owls a 14-10 lead.

Nikorak shut down the Flyers' attempts from there, posting scoreless frames over the sixth, seventh and eighth, as Dayton picked up an unearned run in the ninth.  The Owls scored three in the top of the eighth, putting the final score at 17-11.

Temple returns to the Philadelphia area for a showdown with rival Saint Joseph's on Tuesday, April 5, (3:30 p.m.) at Campbell's Field in Camden, N.J.
