Box Score - Game 1 | Game 2
AMBLER, Pa. - The Temple baseball team held leads in each contest but fell in both games of a doubleheader against La Salle on Sunday afternoon at Skip Wilson Field. The Owls are now 15-14, 2-7 in Atlantic 10 play, while the Explorers move to 17-13, 5-4 in A-10 play.
Junior Brant Norlander, making the start on his birthday, helped save the Owls' bullpen for the second game of the day by putting in 8.1 innings of work in game one. Norlander fanned four and gave up six runs to card the loss. Freshman Zach Batchelor relieved Norlander and was unable to record an out, handing it over to redshirt-sophomore Steve Visnic for the final two outs.
La Salle starter Eric Van Wyke went 7.1 innings and limited the Owls to just two runs to earn the win. Van Wyk struck out four and scattered seven hits, handing it over to Kevin Christy for the final 1.2 frames.
Senior Ryan Ferguson was three-for-three in game one, driving in one of the Owls two runs on a towering homer in the bottom of the second to give Temple the first lead of the game at 1-0. The Explorers picked up two in the top of the third, taking the lead for good from there.
Another in the seventh made the score 3-1 in favor of La Salle, but the Owls showed some fight. Freshman Will Remillard, who went one-for-four in the contest, drilled a homer over the left field fence to make it a one run game, 3-2.
La Salle made a potential comeback even more difficult by posting seven runs in the top of the ninth, with the Owls unable to mount a rally in the ninth to put the final score a 10-2.
Freshman Matt Hockenberry started and lasted 6.2 innings in game two. Hockenberry was perfect over the first three frames, but eventually allowed four runs and struck out five. Nikorak threw the final 2.1 innings and suffered the loss, giving up a pair of runs.
Cody Weiss started for La Salle and lasted 6.0 innings, holding the Owls to just two runs. Temple managed to get two off of reliever Dominic Sgroi, and picked up another off of Pat Christensen.
Senior Adrian Perez led the Owls with two RBI in game two, going one-for-five. Remillard was also a catalyst on offense for the Owls, going two-for-four with a double and two runs scored.
The Owls once again jumped out to the first lead of the game, as senior Byron McKoy drew a walk to lead off the contest. McKoy swiped second and third to put himself in scoring position at third, scoring after redshirt-junior Steve Nikorak ripped a single up the middle.
Back-to-back one-run innings from the Explorers turned the lead in favor of the visitors, 2-1. Temple came back to tie things up in the bottom of the sixth. Remillard led off the frame with a double to left field, scoring on a single into left by Flanary to tie the game at 2-2.
The Explorers came back with a three-run seventh to retake the lead at 5-2, but Temple answered with three in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game at 5-5. Remillard sparked the rally with a lead off double down the left field line. Junior Cameron Green was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second, with pinch-hitter Taylor Juran also being plunked to load the bases. Junior Jabair Khan drew a walk to bring home a run, while a single to center by Perez plated two and tied the game.
La Salle ran up four runs in the ninth to take a commanding 9-5 lead, holding Temple scoreless in the top of the ninth to take the game.
McKoy, who recorded two hits on the day, is now tied with Tom Whalen and Rob Cucinotta for third place all-time in Temple history with 228 hits. The Charlotte, N.C., native reached the mark in 179 games, four games faster than Whalen (183) and 22 games sooner than Cucinotta (201). Next on the career hit list is #2 Jamie Abercrombie (231, 2006-09).
