PHILADELPHIA - Coming off of a rough home weekend against La Salle, the Temple baseball team looks to return momentum to its side as the Owls host Atlantic 10 foe Massachusetts on April 15-17. The Owls are now 15-14 overall, 2-7 in conference play.
Temple held leads in all three contests this past weekend, and got solid performances out of all three starters. As a team, Temple still leads the nation and conference with a .347 team batting average.
Freshman Will Remillard leads the Owls each batting .380. Remillard, 35-92 with eight doubles on the season, jacked his third career home run over the weekend against La Salle. Defensively, the Cohoes, N.Y., product has been a force for the Owls, gunning down a conference-high 23 runners. Redshirt-junior Steve Nikorak ranks third on the team hitting .377, tied with senior Byron McKoy for second on the squad with 10 doubles. McKoy is second on the club with 48 hits, now ranked third all-time in Temple history with 228.
Senior Ryan Ferguson crushed his team-leading seventh homer against La Salle last Sunday, now batting .371 with nine doubles and a team-best 37 RBI. Classmate shortstop Adrian Perez continues to fuel the Temple offense with a .370 average on a team-high 12 doubles and conference-best 50 hits.
Senior Ben White (3-5, 5.07 ERA) will make his regularly scheduled appearance as the Friday starter for Temple, going against junior Glen Misho (4-1, 4.17 ERA) of UMass. Saturday again features junior Brant Norlander (3-2, 4.89 ERA) of Temple, facing junior Robert Machado (2-4, 4.17 ERA) of the Minutemen. No starter had been determined for Sunday for Temple at press time, with UMass slated to throw sophomore Dennis Torres (2-2, 3.62 ERA).
Scouting the Minutemen...
Massachusetts (9-15, 3-3 A-10) is led by the potent bat of senior Matt Gedman, who is batting a massive .452 (42-93) with a team-best six doubles. Senior Peter Copa leads the club with 23 RBI on a team-high seven homers, hitting .354 (29-82).
Series history...
The Owls won their last meeting against the Minutement back in 2009, taking two of three games to win the season series at Amherst. UMass still holds a slight advantage in the all-time series with a mark of 42-39-1 against Temple.
