Rain forces game to be postponed, Owls walk off with 10-9 win

Box Score

AMBLER, Pa.
- Rains passing through the area forced the Temple baseball team's contest with UMass on Saturday to be postponed to Sunday, with the Owls walking off with a 10-9 win in the continuation of game two.  The Owls, now 16-15, 3-8 in Atlantic 10 play, and Minutemen, now 10- nearly made it through the top of the ninth before rain forced a stoppage of play with the score tied at 9-9 on Saturday, with a 10th-inning single by senior Adrian Perez plating the game-winning run in junior Cameron Green.

UMass jumped on Owls' starter Brant Norlander (2.2 IP, 2 ER, 3K) to start, posting three-straight scoring innings to open the game to take a 8-0 lead.  The Owls defense was not up to the task early on as well, committing five errors in that time.

Redshirt-sophomore Steve Visnic came on for Norlander and threw the next 4.1 innings, not allowing a single run to cross the plate over that time.  The Temple bats came to life and scored nine runs over the sixth and seventh innings to take a 9-8 lead.

Ferguson led off the sixth with a single to left, advancing to second on a passed ball and to third on a single by redshirt-junior Steve Nikorak.  Freshman Will Remillard put down a bunt that scored Ferguson and moved Nikorak to second.  Junior Taylor Juran singled to load the bases, with sophomore Henry Knabe stepping in and hitting a two-RBI single into right.  Senior Byron McKoy lifted a ball into left that plated one more, putting the score at 9-5.

After Visnic held UMass scoreless in the top of the seventh, the Owls went back to work and plated four more runs to take a 9-8 lead.  Ferguson again was the catalyst, doubling to lead off the frame and chase UMass starter Robert Machado (6.0 IP).  He would score as Nikorak followed with a double, with a walk to Remillard and Juran reaching first on a error loading the bases.  Khan reached base on a fielder's choice that allowed Nikorak to score, with Flanary's fielder's choice plating Remillard to tie the game.  McKoy hit a two-out grounder to third that was misplayed, allowing Khan to score to give the Owls the lead.

The Minutemen managed one in the eighth off of Temple reliever Matt Hockenberry to tie the game at 9-9, with the ensuing rains stopping play shortly after.  The game was picked up on Sunday starting with two outs in the top of the ninth.  Nikorak took the hill for the Owls to start, securing the final out of the ninth and shutting down the Minutemen in the 10th to set up the walk-off win for Temple.

Green led off the frame with a towering double down the right field line, advancing to third on a failed pickoff attempt by UMass' pitcher Leif Sorensen.  Perez stepped in with one out and ripped a single up the middle to give the Owls a 10-9 win.  Sorensen took the loss for UMass, while Nikorak earns the win.
