McKoy Ties All-Time Hit Mark As Baseball Stalled By UMass, 25-10

Owls' senior left fielder records career hit 234 in loss

Box Score

AMBLER, Pa.
- Senior Byron McKoy tied the Temple all-time hit mark with a single in the bottom of the eighth, but a potent UMass offense gave the Owls a 25-10 loss in the series final at Skip Wilson Field on Sunday afternoon.  The Owls, who won the continuation of the middle game earlier in the day, are now 16-16, 3-9 in Atlantic 10 play while the Minutemen move to 11-16, 5-4 in A-10 play.

McKoy needed three hits entering the contest to tie the all-time mark of 234 set by Bob Filler (1998-01, 216 games).  The Charlotte, N.C., native recorded a double and a pair of singles to meet the record in just 182 games played.  McKoy, redshirt-junior Steve Nikorak (2-5, 2 RBI, 2B) and senior Ryan Ferguson each drove in two runs in the contest.

Nikorak (2.0 IP, 2 K) took the hill to start for the Owls after securing the game two win just minutes prior.  Nikorak allowed eight earned in the series finale to card the loss, with five other Owls seeing action on the mound.  Junior Tyler Horst tossed two frames, followed by freshman Zach Batchelor, redshirt-sophomore Steve Visnic, freshman Ryan Davis and freshman Zach White.

For UMass, starter Dennis Torres gave up six earned runs over the 3.1 innings of work he put in.  He would be relieved by Charlie Benson, who went 5.2 innings to earn the win.

After the Minutemen posted five runs in the first half inning of play, the Owls answered with three in the bottom of the first to make it a 5-3 ball game.  McKoy led off the frame with a single, moving to second on a single to left by senior Adrian Perez (1-4, R).  Nikorak stepped in a belted a double to left center to score both runs, later scoring himself on a single by senior Ben Flanary (1-3, RBI).

UMass would blow the game open with back-to-back four-run innings, putting up one more run in the top of the fourth before the Owls would plate another run.  Temple efficiently scored four runs on two hits in the bottom of the fourth, as McKoy roped a two-run double and Ferguson (1-5, 2 RBI, HR) belted a monster two-run shot to right center to cut the deficit to 14-7.

The Owls would come no closer, as UMass built a 25-10 lead over the final frames, with Temple managing a pair of runs in the eighth and one more in the ninth.  Freshman Bobby Heitzman made the most of his first collegiate at bat, crushing a double down the right field line.

Temple is back in action next as the Owls travel to Delaware on Tuesday (3:00 p.m.) and Coppin State on Wednesday (3:00 p.m.).
