Temple errors fuel big innings for Rams
Box Score
KINGSTON, R.I. - A nine-run third inning from Rhode Island helped the Rams hand the Temple baseball team a 15-4 loss in game two of the Owls' three game series at Bill Beck Field on Saturday afternoon. Temple is now 21-19, 3-11 in Atlantic 10 play on the year while the Rams improve to 25-17, 11-6 in A-10 play.
Junior Brant Norlander's (3-3) day ended after 2.2 innings of work, with the Temple defense not up to the task in the third inning when he was pulled. Norlander struck out five and walked as many, giving up five earned runs but seeing 10 Rams cross the plate during his time on the hill. Redshirt-sophomore Steve Visnic tossed the next 1.1 innings, being relieved by junior Jimmy Devine who threw 1.0 innings of scoreless ball. Freshman Phil Gianakos threw the final three frames allowing no runs and striking out four.
Redshirt-junior Steve Nikorak went one-for-four with a two-run homer in the contest, extending his hit streak to a season-best 12 games. Senior Adrian Perez led the Owls with three hits on the day, one of which was an RBI-double.
Senior Ken Graveline (5-3) earned the win for Rhode Island, allowing four runs and striking out five over 6.0 innings of work.
Rhode Island took a 10-0 lead after three innings of play, but the Owls broke the scoreless tie after a two-run fourth. Perez led off the inning with a single to right, coming around to score after Nikorak belted a ball over the left field fence.
The Rams picked up five more in the bottom of the fourth, the final runs they would score in the contest. Temple rallied for a pair in the top of the fifth, on RBI-doubles by senior Ben Flanary and Perez. Those runs would be the last of the contest for either team. The Owls posted 10 hits and stranded eight runners in the game.
The series wraps tomorrow with a 12:00 p.m. start time. Freshman Matt Hockenberry takes the hill for the Owls, going against lefty Stephen Peterson of Rhode Island.
